Exclamation Is my zx3 worth upgrading?

I have a white 2003 ford focus zx3. It has about 95,000 miles. It has an automatic trans and a stock 2.0 I4 zetec motor. It sat this winter and the winter before, but was driven in the summer last year. Just recharged the battery, let it run for 20 minutes, then shut it off. Still planning on changing oil and trans fluid soon before it is driven again.

That is a really big job. Unless the car is in great shape and you plan to keep it for at least 5 years it is a huge project. I have a 2001 5 spd with 96,000 miles with a few mods and spares in Cleveland east that may be for sale.

I have 19x,xxx miles on mine and still making changes to it.
If the body is clean, go to town making it what you want. The engine is pretty stout.

I'm not sure what a manual conversion would cost but it may be close to the point that it's just better to get a different car.

I'm spending quite a bit on a 2003 ZX3 now, new suspension, header, cat, exhaust etc. to get it ready for Solo II, but I'm leaving the automatic in it. I realize the auto isn't ideal but I'm old and slow, and the car didn't cost anything since I bought it new for one of my daughters when she graduated from college. So in my case the cost is just the work I am doing for it and that works out pretty cheap compared to buying another car to build up.

Getting ahold of a 6speed will be kinda costly... look in the buy/sell/trade
section of the forum, I think there is a guy selling one right now... I think he
wants around $600 and another guy asking $800 (I think it has a torsan LSD
and less than 60k miles), but you might be able to find cheaper... if it's real
cheap it's probably been abused and not worth it... And you'd still need all of
the linkage...

Converting to a 5 speed would be allot cheaper so long as it is the MTX-75 and
not the iB5, then it will actually handle a considerable about of power, I think
there is guys pushing upwards of 400 ponies through theirs... Since 5 speeds
are not as rare and are by no means "special" you could probably pull a used
one from a junk yard for about $100 depending on the yard... Again, just make
sure it is an mtx-75 and not an iB5... you can tell by what engine it is
connected to, if it is a zetec it is an mtx-75, if it is an SPI then it is an iB5...
But the MTX-75 can come out of anything from a focus, to a ford contour to
even an escort... So there really common compared to the 6speeds only
offered in the SVT and STs...

Up to you... Just thought I'd toss it out there...

You should also take into consideration that the Getrag 6 speed in the SVT has no replaceable parts from Getrag or Ford. I pulled mine in 2011 to replace the clutch disc and took it to my friend's shop to replace the syncros and I discovered that Ford never commissioned Getrag to supply replacement party so they didn't bother. "Getrag moved their operations from Germany to the US in 2009 but it doesn't matter since there is no money in supplying parts for a tranny that was only available for 3 years". End Quote!
