it's happened to me before...i needed a fuel pump. The guy at the Ford dealer told this happens when people don't refill their tank until it's nearly empty. They replaced fuel pump and now everything is okie dokie.

p.s. if you get your pump replaced, makesure you have as little as possible in the tank. It shaves their repair time off a little.

i don't really think it is the fuel pump, but when that happens it usually is the cat being clogged...but, it could always be something else.

Exact symptoms I had when my fuel pump went. Was on my way back to NY from Ohio over the 4th of July weekend. Started giving me trouble about 8 hours into my 12 hour trip, took me 15 hours to make the trip. Had to stop about every 1/2 hour when it would die, let it sit, start it up and go, and then do it all over again, and again, and again....

Question

Quote:
if it was the fuel pump wouldn’t it throw a check engine light?
In a word.....

NO..

More in-depth...

True the focus has a large amount of OBD-II codes in it, but with all the things I did to my car, the warranty waived BYE-Bye along time ago...

Why am I telling you this and not just getting into the whole OBD-II thing I was just on??

So you know I am not pulling this info out of my a$$..

I have the Chilton manual, the Haynes Manual, and the actual 2-Book FORD Factory Shop Workbook set..

After doing a little research on your problem, I found that the fuel pump will not trigger the MIL because there are no links from the fuel pump to the system that activates the indicator. The only way the fuel pump could trigger the light is if it directly caused a fault in one of the systems that is monitored by the OBD-II system. But tracing the sensors there's only really 2 or 3 that the pump would affect, (ie. fuel rail pressure, fuel tank internal pressure, fuel temperature) and for them to be messed up, your car wouldn't start at all.... So if the fuel pump is in fact the source of your trouble, then the answer is NO.. It wouldn't make the MIL activate.

That happened to me also, on a long road trip from S. Jersey to Pittsburgh, then Cleveland. When it first happend, it just started to run rough, after which I pulled over and got a snack, then it was fine to Pittsburgh and a little ways into Ohio. In Ohio, I had to constantly stop and start until I got to Cleveland. However, the whole way back from Ohio to Pittsburgh, then a couple days later to NJ it was fine. I brought it to the dealer the following week and they replaced the fuel pump and filter. It's been fine since (only around 5k miles has sinced passed though, with no extended trips). My car had about 25k miles on it...hopefully this won't happen around 50k...the dealer said the replacement oem pump is different than the old oem one...hopefully the problems are all ironed out.
