Or at least used that as a baseline.

I downloaded a picture of a degree wheel and printed it to a CD. Used one of those sticky CD label things.

Made a little pointer out of a wire.
Used a cam bolt and couple washers to hold the CD in place.
Rotated the cam and watched my dial caliper until I got about to where the Cat specs were.

Or something similar to that.

Then I had a baseline to adjust the cam gears.


Trying to use the cam bar and one of the cam gears at full advance/retard and bringing it back to zero just never worked for me. Or at least no as well as degreeing the cam did.


And when I had the parts out I made this --> SVT/ST170 Intake Camshaft Profile Graph (which you've probably found)


basically, I didn't use any of the cam tools.
Also, i find TDC by forcing #2 to BDC. If the cams aren't in the head, the valves are closed. So I used air pressure. Works great.

This means I'm totally out of time. I'll read all of these and come back was hoping for help from Tom and you.

Actually I should ask this too,

What pistons are you on?


Keep in mind that I'm on stock zetec pistons/rods. And I have very limited, IMO, valve movement / interference. I can almost move the cam gear lock to lock W/O touching a valve to piston TDC. Almost.

Being you're shaved a bit more, keep the valve to piston contact in mind. Always rotate the engine by hand first.

Being you're shaved a bit more, keep the valve to piston contact in mind. Always rotate the engine by hand first.
Probe 9:1's, trying to wake up the turbo sooner and have more power @ 20psi and be finally done with it. Thanks for the heads up

This is very easy , use a compression gauge and get a base then move the cam gears 1-2 marks and check compression again , your not going to hit the pistons if your close on the cams and there install , if the compression comes up go 1 - 2 marks more till it stops , I have done this dozens of times and never bent a valve , you should see the compression come up to about mid 190`s

Advance 12 degrees in the intake and retarded 2 on the exhaust got me to 190's. That's full advance in the cam gear, to go further would had to time it locking it in retard.

That's about what I'd found too. And is why I went to degreeing instead.

Ended up that I have both gears zero'd and can adjust like I could on a normal zetec. Lots of extra work, but the result was what I wanted.

It ran good the way you are at now. but it was that 'what if' that got to me and eventually I couldn't take not knowing. And now that I know, it was off some and I was loosing some power.

Idle and starting is so much better, was concerned about interference and too much timing with boost. How much cranking compresion were you able at what degree?

You can't relate the cam timing on the gear to mine. Or even what I got the similar way you set yours. As you already know, 1* makes a difference.

Exact same process, then you can compare results. Otherwise it's all meaningless.


Basically, if it seems to run well and you're happy,,, let it be. If you get that bug like I did, degree the cams.


Keep in mind that the VCT adjust the cam about 40*.

You need to go further on the Int cam gear, there is more to get , you will have to loosen the Intake cam gear and turn the cam till your back to " 0 "
the do your cranking compression again , this only gets you close you will need to dyno tune/adjust them
