In response to all the questions about N/A Zetec performance lately

Post em if you got em boys.... [headbang]
Heres my recepie

Breathe Easier
- Full Intake/Exhaust w/2.5" (Inside Diameter) Piping
- 65mm Throttle Body
- 70mm MAF tube
- SVT Fuel Pump
- 24 lbs Fuel Injectors
- Tune

Engine Efficency
- Headwork (Port, Polish, Deck, 3 Angle Valve Job, Oversized Valves)
- Built engine (High Compression, Lightweight Pistons/Rods, ARP hardware)
- Reinforced Main caps
- Knife-Edged Crankshaft
- AC Delete
- PS Delete
- (Tune) Alternator cutoff at WOT

Rev Higher
- Custom Intake Manifold w/short runners
- Aggressive Camshafts (High lift, Good Overlap)
- Adjustable Cam Gears
- Valves/Springs (Lightweight and designed for high rpm)
- Billet Oil Pump Gears
- (tune) Rev limiter set to 8k

Stay in the sweet spot
- 4.06 gears

Reduce Rotational Mass
- Underdrive Pulleys
- Lightweight Rims/Tires
- Lightweight Flywheel

And as always, due to the High Revving, low tq, not daily driver friendly nature of a pure N/A build, Weight reduction is a must to help combat the lack of low end response.
LINK[/URL]

Daily Driver Friendly
Lightweight battery, Carbon Fiber Hood, Carbon Fiber Hatch, Wheels (most important), Flywheel (2nd Most important), Front Race Seats, Rear Seat Delete, Receiver only with only the front door speakers

Track Oriented
Remove the AC stuff, Remove the Powersteering stuff, Remove the Dash accept for the gauges, Swap all of the glass for Lexan, Remove the wheel well guards, Remove the rear bumper support, Remove both the air bags, scrape off all the sound barrier stuff, Remove all interior panels

You will also want to get an SVT fuel pump. and you forgot two of the most important things!!!

High lift Cams w/ good overlap

Valvetrain capable of handling high rpms.

o, and wider valves!!

#5 ·
I thought massive cams w/adjustable gears w/lightweight valves/springs just about covered it. do you have a link to something that'll work? im thinking i should provide some links as well?

#7 ·
It would be more complete if you did that or gave names of all the parts and prices.

#6 ·
I could post my whole build step by step including all parts i have and parts i needed to buy. but that would take hours to type!

#8 ·
This would be my mod list

Breathe Easier
-SVT Header
-SVT ORP
-CFM SVT Flexpipe
-2.5” Exhaust All the Way back (Magnaflow muffler is my choice)
-2000 Ported Intake Manifold
-65mm Throttle Body
-AEM Cold Air Intake

Engine Efficency
-Ported and Polished and Decked Head, with great valve train, 3 angle valve job, bigger valves
-Built motor (rods, pistons, ARP, Toms Main Caps, CFM Billet Oil Pump, knife edged crank)
-Toms Tune (with custom tweeks) (dyno tune)
-SVT Fuel Pump
-SVT Maf
-SVT Injectors
-FR Stage III Cams
-AEM Cam Gears

Stay in the sweet spot (rotational mass)
-4.06 gears
-Torsen Diff
-Lightweight Flywheel
-Spec Stg II+ Clutch
-CFM 2pc Underdrive pullies

The only thing im not likin too much is the cost of going with full SVT header setup is considerably more than a pure race header would yield and be similar power wise. Also, the 00 intake mani will limit power over 5k. Im gonna go ahead and steal your wording on the cylinder head and SVT fuel equipment. [thumb]

#9 ·
btw mine is built with the intention of daily driving it.

i would also add Steeda Motor Mounts with a SVT Pass Side, and SVT Cam Cover on that side

#11 ·
no problem.

i think the SVT header is well worth it. especially for cali because i can swap a cat on if needed to pass smog.

also the 00 intake manifold with good cams and a good tune shouldn't have problems over 5k...porting makes a huge difference.

#13 ·
no they wont be.

how do you figure 30# injectors are needed for a 160-175whp car?

no...24#s will be more then fine.

#16 ·
So i figured i would start with my build with prices. And all prices stated are new. You can usually find these items in the bst forum. links will be towards the same or comparable systems.

i didnt spend nearly as much and i just just about the same parts.
got my parts from the bst new but resold in the BST's for lower than retail price.

#24 ·
most forged rods come with arp's, well at least my eagles did![slap]
i got a question. does the machine shop oversize the stock valve seats, or do they have to put in bigger ones for 1mm oversized valves? i wonder how much extra it would cost with the 3-5 angle valve jod?[idea]

#20 ·
I said this was MY engine build and its pretty extensive, though those are not necessariliy the prices i paid, but what someone else would pay if they didn't find the deals i did.

#21 ·
The thing is ITB's are such a restrictive option that it'll be custom made. Its kinda a no brainer that it'll make more power but ive seen maybe one example of it in over 8 years now. do you have a link to a kit that'll work in a focus chassis?

#22 ·
Well ether way here. This is pretty much a must have list of parts for a wicked N/A and when i mean wicked going beyond the basic I/H/E. If you want more power or more power a cheaper way then you need to go FI. Of course if you do all of the N/A or most of those steps you will end up with an even badder @$$ FI car.

#25 ·
IIRC, yes, they do. the 5 angle valve job will only help w/ the valves seating more evenly. and IIRC again, it was 30 bucks more, but it will vary from machine shop to machine shop.

#30 ·
Excellent info guys. Very helpful in pointing some one who doesnt know much about the focus (such as my self) in the right direction. All the upgrades are pretty much standard with most 4 cylinder NA builds but what i found really helpful was the links of where to get the parts and the mention of the companies that make parts for this car. Thanks guys

#32 ·
this prob isnt the best place to ask this since this is a FI question but i dont wanna start a new thread for a simple question. How high of a nitrous shot can i expect to use safely on stock internals. I am expereinced with nitrous and i plan on using a WoT switch and a window switch so please no lectures on the dangers of nitrous. I plan on pretty much coping thebestthaticouldo's set before the kit but just trying to get a good idea of what to look into. also Besthtaticoudo whats your duty cycle look like woth 28lbs injectors?
