Exclamation No retaining clip on new CV axle?

i was reading through my haynes manual about how to install my new RH side CV axle.

problem is that the book shows that the tranny side of the driveaxle is supposed to have a retaining clip on the spline. i looked at my new axle and it doesnt have a recess(sp?) for the retaining clip.

has anyone else installed a new passenger side axle? if so, did yours have the retaining clip on the spline that goes into the differential?

btw i have a MTX-75

the US passenger side does not have one. Keep in mind a lot of the haynes pictures are from european models.

but Ford cost on one of those for the driver side is about 20 bucks

Sorry to bump this but do I really need the retaining clip on the drivers side? I was thinking about taking the clip off and just installing the axle without the clip.

Double yes. The passenger side is held in by the outer mid bearing assembly. If you do driver side like that, the first time you hit a big pothole the axle will come out of the trans, and let's just say you will NOT like it. Not even a little bit.

If its there, it's there for a reason.

I apologize, but I disagree with the axle 'coming out' of the trans.. That is not correct. The axle can't go anywhere with the suspension all assembled. And many mechanics I know personally always remove them. (Includin my buddy Terry, who is a master Lexus tech and now manages a Lexus service dept..)They remove them for two reasons. 1. Easy swapping. 2. They say those clips can break off into the transmission. I just replaced both of my axles when I swapped my mtx.. I took mine off before I put the axle in, and my car is okee dokee.

CV joints have the ability to plunge (change length). If the friction of the plunge in the axle is greater then the friction between the axle splines and the diff, then the joint will slide on those splines. How far? Enough to come out? I don't know. All I know is the I don't want my axle sliding on the splines as that is not how it was designed to work.

1. Why are they swapping the axles so many times?
2. Show me proof.

I have nearly 200,000 on my transmission; 200whp, countless drag passes, etc, etc. Not a single axle issue once. Or internal transmission issue for that matter.

The only problem I've ever seen was on a 2G Eclipse where the kid pried the old clip off and tried to put it on the new axle. It was so mangled that it was bound to cause problems. And it did.

If you don't know how to put piston rings on, you shouldn't be dicking with a C-V clip.

Now if we're talking Ford rear axles (7.5, 8.8, 9") then the story changes. But that's a completely different animal.
