Tire Recommendations for 2005 Ford Focus Sedan

My tires are 'marginal' and nearing the end of their warranted life. Winter is coming and I have been hearing ads for tire deals on the radio. Seems that everyone guarantees the lowest prices.

I live in Southern New Hampshire and commute to the Boston area (40 miles each way). The commute is mostly highway, but there are poorly plowed hills on each end. I care more about durability, handling, and price than ride and noise. My car has 161k miles on it and is running well. My inspection is due in April, but I can get a sticker as early as January.

I would appreciate recommendations for specific tires, merchants, and deals if you have found one. I would also appreciate an education on tire pricing/warranties.

Right now, I am looking at the MICHELIN X-ICE XI3 195/60R15H. Town Fair Tire will install four for $381.60 after a $70 rebate.

Is the FACTORY RECOMMENDED 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT (+$49) a good idea?

thank you.

If your looking for snow tires those would work for your snowy/icy conditions, then you have to either change them or swap them out in warmer weather. Similar to Blizzacks. A a/s tire isn't going to work in extrstreme snowy/icy conditions but works great yr around. For that Continental DWS's or a DWS06 work great. What tires do you have now? & a 4 wheel alignment is a good idea, for they can check your suspension for wear.

Those would work, but are a a/s compared to the winter only tires you linked at 1st.

Are you looking for a winter only tire or an all season tire? You can not use winter tires year round (well you can but you will wear through them much much faster in warmer weather and loose their advantage in winter faster.)

OK. Tire Rack is a great resource. Thank you! I am looking for all season tires which are good in the snow ;-) I was looking at the Good Year 195/60R15 Eagle RS-As on the back page of the Walmart BF ad. Tire Rack and Town Fair Tire give it middling reviews and the price is not great when you add on installation fees.

Filtering on all season (look how much I have already learned), this seems to be a pretty good choice...

GOODYEAR EAGLE SPORT ALL SEASON 195/60R15V

On TireRack, I see...

GOODYEAR EAGLE SPORT ALL-SEASON (V-SPEED RATED) 195/60R15 88V

Are these different tires? What does the 88 mean?

Thats the load rating. If your looking for a great a/s tire= Continental DWS is the way to go.

The eagle rs-a is terrible in the snow. I've driven them on fwd rwd and AWD vehicles in the snow and even the AWD performance was terrible!
