Tackiness of the Rubber Compound

I have been very pleased running inexpensive, no name tires up until now. Since the intake manifold repair and a run of fuel system cleaner in a tank of gas the car seems to be making a little more power. When I leave a stop I now have some wheel spin.

Tire pressure is 1psi below 32 that's called for on the sticker so the cause of this tire spin (afaik) can only be lack of tackiness of the rubber compound.

For future reference, how would I know if a tire is made with a high quality rubber compound before the purchase of the next set?

You can start by buying quality tires from quality manufacturers. Chinese "no name" tires will never use a quality compound.

Tread design also plays a roll.

with tires you get what you pay for...if you haven't heard of the manufacturer or cannot pronounce the name don't buy them. your cheaper tires tend to use synthetic rubbers in their compounds which keep the cost down and don't ride/wear/grip well at all. if you are looking for something that wont spin when you get into the loud pedal you're going to want to stay away from the cheaper tires and get something performance on the car, the compounds will be a little softer but you'll increase grip.

Tire Rack is great to go to just to check on what folks think of various tires.
You can find the tires that fit, then start reading comments, and look at the charts of which tires do what best.
Great info and well worth the effort.

Is this Sumitomo fine grain carbon black tread compound high quality?

Sumitomo HTR T4

I'm not worried about surveys or reviews, just looking for excellent noise comfort and better grip.

Just buy a quality tire from a quality manufacturer. Look at reviews to get a general idea of both ride comfort and noise levels. Don't worry about tread compounds, if you're not racing it doesn't matter - any quality tire (that isn't a low rolling resistance tire) will have sufficient grip for daily driving use. If you start racing, or run your car hard then get to worrying about it.

If the whole idea is to never break the tires free, then you'll need to get some high performance summer tires. You aren't very clear on just how and when you are spinning the tires, but unless you're flooring it from a stop you shouldn't be spinning them with any decent all season tire. If you're experiencing wheel spin under light or moderate acceleration then there is an issue, and it could be just because your current tires suck, whereas most decent all seasons do not.

Don't over think it. Stick with established tire companies, check reviews to see if most people are happy with what it offers, and go with it. Also, sticking to tires made outside of Asia (with the exception of Japan) is a good idea. Not everything out of China is crap (especially from reputable companies), but tires made elsewhere have a better track record.

I agree they are a great resource when searching for tires and typically only sell reputable brands (not to say if they dont carry a certain brand doesnt mean the brand is rubbish)

I really like how they do head to head test for similar tires too.

There is a "sweet spot" in the throttle. An exact point at a fairly light input where the car seems to accelerate to highway speed fastest. One wheel spins only if I hit that same spot when leaving a stop.

Thanks for the heads up on those imported tires. I will upgrade to another country of origin on the next purchase.
