right, by the math they're supposed to be 1.1% bigger diameter

but yeah, there's a bit of fudge in all of it.

Calculators like that are essentially useless when trying to compare two tires with theoretically similar dimensions. That's because tire sizes are really only labels that designate certain width and diameter dimensional ranges that the tire should fit within. These ranges themselves can be rather broad, sometimes up to 3/4" in both width and diameter.

well, it's definitely softer and quieter. it's not as fun, but it's really not fair to compare a 40-series tire to a 60 with snow tread. :P like all snow tires, on dry roads there's some delay/scrub before they react.

taller sidewalls are helping smooth out the crappy roads here. i'll appreciate that more in the late winter/early spring when we get a phenomenon called "frost heaves" that turn all of our secondary roads into washboard garbage.

the feel of the suspension rebound with less unsprung weight is very different. by some quick math:

summer tire set:
Ti handling package wheel: 25.8lbs
michelin pilot sport 3 @ 235/40-18: 22lbs
total: 47.8lbs/corner

snow tire set:
Cygnus wheel, 16x6.5": 17.86lbs
nokian hakkapelitta r2 @ 205/60-16: 20.1lbs
total: 37.96lbs/corner

again, totally unfair comparison.
