2012 Ti in need of replacement tires ... safe to use a tire w/ lower load index?

Hi guys ... long time lurker here, I just registered and I hope you'll be able to help me out. I couldn't find a definitive answer to my question.

My GF's 2012 Titanium sedan (w/ 18's) is in need of a new set all-season tires.

It's hard to get decent prices on 235-40-18's in Canada so I've been considering the much more popular 225-40-18 size since there's only a ~1% difference in speedo accuracy.

The only thing that bothers me is that while most 235-40-18 tires have a factory recommended 95 load index (1521 pounds), many 225-40-18 tires only have a 92 load index (1389 pounds).

She's just using the car as a daily highway commuter (80 miles roundtrip).

In such situation, would it be safe to use tires with a 92 load index?

Thanks for your help!

Why not at least go with a 225/45/18 or a 245/40/18 way more popular sizes and I would never run a under loaded tire on any car or truck it affects how the car handles and reacts

I guess I'll stick to the OEM size if running a lower load index tire is dangerous.

I'd do it only if other tires that the focus comes with (17"....) had the 92 index or lower.

Barry's Tire Tech has some thoughts on why that's usually not a good idea.
