I think some responders are only reading part of the thread to answer the "new cyl" question...

The bench bleed suggestion is prob. a guess that it got SO dry that that procedure might help.

I USUALLY vacuum bleed, but sometimes need to pump a bit as well, each method (pressure, vacuum & pump) has "tricks" involved to make it work better and if not done "right" might leave some air in the system.

SHOULD be a simple procedure, but often needs to be done twice or with the right "tricks" to get it done satisfactorily.

I got some help with a mechanic that stopped by real quick.

We managed to get enough air out using the caliper bleeders. The car is now drive-able, but I'd still like a more solid pedal.

Does anyone have any experience with the "phoenix injector" or similar products? I'm willing to part way with some cash if it makes my life easier.

No one suggested a new m/c, it was an FYI to those who may come later, also an indicator that m/c bleeding parts may not be available. The inference was that someone might need to cobble up lines to bleed it.

Start at the master cylinder and bleed the lines coming out of it just like the brakes. Have someone step on the pedal while you crack a line, let fluid out, tighten back up.

After this, go to the wheels, do each of them, and then re-test.

I'll take a look at the master cylinder sometime down the road. It's a pain that it's not within reach.
