Snow Tires

I recently purchased a brand new 2012 Focus and it came with a set of winter tires from Ford. Because it has TPMS, can I install them myself? I'm not sure if the winter tires with steelies came with the TPMS or not. How can I tell?

I apologize in advance for such a n00b question.

Your Ford Dealer should be able to place their special tire tool against the tire to see if they get a reading. Then after replaceing the tires they will need to use the same tool to relearn the ecm to the new sensor's. If you don't have the sensor's than the little annoy light will come on. I don't know if that will effect any other funtions of the car. Some cut the timing in the engine just not sure if the Ford Focus does.

I bet if you'd call the dealers service manager you bought the car from they would tell you if they installed them or not. My guess is that the dealer probably would install them to prevent future service complaints. A rigid metal valve stem is another indicator that sensors are usually installed. If you're currently driving the car with those tires and the TPMS light is not coming on the answer is fairly evident.

Every Focus (US and Canadian) should have the TPMS sensors. If you have the sensors already installed in the wheels you can change the tires out youself but the onboard computer will need to "re-learn" the new sensors. This could be done at the dealer with their little tool or you could pick one up from us - Ford Trigger Tool - and train them yourself. If you already have one of these tools shoot me an E-mail because they don't come with instructions, I can get those right out for you.

Never seen a Vancouver snowfall have you?

it may not occur often in the city limits, but when it does, the snow is so wet (because it usually just below freezing) that it compacts down into this wicked ice slush mess. its like driving on an ice rink, that has water on it. it's worse than Toronto snow.

also, we have nice mountains, that we like to go skiing on.
as an FYI, there typically ~10 feet of snow on the local mountains, so ya, need snow tires.
