Trying to not break the bank.

My front suspension is shot (struts and springs need to be replaced). A friend of mine gave me stock replacements from his 02 ZX3 with 90K on them...I brought the free struts and springs I got to my mechanic, and he said they're about ready to go too. He wants to put Monroes on both sides, which he said cost $240 per SIDE (~800 for the whole job with tax). Ouch. He's not comfortable putting the used stuff on, but he'd be perfectly willing to assemble a kit if I brought it to him.

If I have to spend $500+, should I just get a full kit? I saw this one on Steeda's site: http://www.steedafocus.com/parts/for...nsion-kit.html

I have yet to find a kit with the strut & spring assembled though. Wonder how much the mechanic would charge me to just put the springs on...I could take care of the rest.

Suggestions?

If I recall correctly, I believe there is an FRPP kit that comes pre-assembled. Someone should correct me on that, though.

Yeah, my friend has the FRPP. 1.5 drop is too much for me. I want to stay as stock as possible. I hear good things about the pre-assembled SVT kit Tousley sells though: http://tousleyfordparts.com/partloca...catalogid=5684

Cool, then I can order them once my next payday comes. Shouldn't be too hard to swap everything since the struts are preassembled. Tousley recommends adding the SVT rear sway though...I don't know if I want that much oversteer, or if it's really necessary.

There's two SVT spring/shock kits. One comes unassembled and includes springs, shocks, and a bigger rear sway bar. The other kit includes springs and shocks as well as new upper strut mounts and bearings instead of the rear sway bar. I believe this kit comes assembled. My preference is the kit with the bar. It's great bang for the buck (under 300.00 delivered) and result in a significant improvement in handling. You will need to get some strut mounts and bearings as these are a wear item and shouldn't be reused. Rock Auto parts has good prices on KYB mounts and bearing. FYI, the average life of a shock/strut is 50 to 60K miles. Shocks and struts with 90K miles on them are indeed worn out. It would have been a total waste of money to install them.

Ouch is right! That's twice what I paid for full Monroe Sensa-Trac strut assemblies @ PepBoys.

well over a 50% markup then. little high, it usually should be around 30-40%

Not worried about his markup now. My SVT kit is on its way from Tousley.
