Front End Clunk??

I already know that my suspension needs to be changed, and I'm working on it, but recently my Focus has been making more strange noises. It started after I left a job interview and hit a slight dip at a speed that was probably more than recommended....damn drainage ditches. Anyway, not only does it make the usual creaking and groaning, but in addition to that when I turn after the wheels get to a certain point I hear a single pop, and if I turn further there are consecutive pops. Also pops in reverse order when I straighten the wheels. I checked the wheel wells, and nothing seems to be in the way for the tires to rub or catch on. I'm wondering if it could still be just a part of the suspension problems, or if it's something else I'll need to check out. Sound mostly come from the passenger side, although occasionally on the driver's side, and seems to only happen when I turn right....All help is very much appreciated.

My '03 SE does that.. I also need new struts, I'm pretty sure it's the bearing plates. Also, when you're changing those, take a close look at all your control arm bushings, sway bar links, etc... After a while they dry out, rot, and start making some noises. Hope this helps!

I plan on checking all that very soon. I did find out that the owner before me is a cheap ass, and instead of replacing a boot to cover a joint so as to keep it lubricated and clean, he wrapped a series of plastic bags around said joint......jackass.

The clunking however, is being caused by a broken spring on the right wheel. Apparently it has been broken for some time, but had settled until I hit that bump. Now the upper part of the spring is overlapping the bottom part of the spring, and it pops when I turn because it is readjusting the weight of the car.

Some early Foci received a batch a bad springs and Ford had a service bulletin on this for a while. They replaced a number of them for free. Replace both front springs when you do the repair. If one failed the other is probably not far behind. An SVT spring/shock kit might be worth considering. Great handling upgrade without sacrificing too much comfort as well as great bang for the buck. Entire kit can be delivered to your door for 300.00 or less.
