Decent tires for occasional auto-x and daily driving?

Hey guys im in the market for new tires, i dont know whats good or not. im running 17x7.5 and im looking for a decent tire that i can use on the street (florida) with decent wet traction that i can also use on the occasional auto-x or track day... Does such tires exist? I just dont have the money for a second set of wheels and expensive track day tires in addition to new street tires...so i want something that can tackle both.

Max/Extreme Performance are good categories to look at for occasional track days as well as a daily driver. What size are you running? We recommend a 205/45R17. Here are a few to look at, starting with the best...

Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position
Continental ExtremeContact DW
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11

While 205/45-17 is the "ideal" size from an overall diameter standpoint don't be afraid to use 215/45-17. It's the size that came stock on the Focus SVT and is only slightly bigger in overall diameter and results in minimal, if any, size related issues. There's also increased tire selection/more options in this size and usually better prices as well.

Just remember that autocross (not to mention track use) significantly impacts tire wear. One track day can easily reduce the overall life of a street oriented performance tire by 25 to 50% or more depending on how aggressive you are. You may want to rethink the "actual long term" costs and benefits of having a second or dedicated set of tires for "play". A new set of full tread depth tires will actually wear faster than a shaved set on the track or autocross course. It's not unusual to tear chunks of thread from a full depth tread tire rendering it useless for anything, including the street. That can get real expensive real quick. My suggestion is to buy a set of used autocross rubber from a top tier competitor. These guys (and gals) replace tires well before they are fully worn so they still have quite a few runs left in them. They make good lapping tires as well and best of all you can usually get them pretty cheap.

thanks guys, Geezer- i suppose you make some good points there lol. I might just look for a 17x7.5 steelie for auto x if they even make them.. look for some used tires on the forums.. to be honest, i didnt even think about the course tearing chunks off.. lol.

So what brands/models of 215/45-17s should i keep my eye out for?

Trevor's list above is still applicable if you're looking for a performance street tire that can be used for occasional autocross/track use.
