I have a Focus 2010 SES. I replaced the 4 tires yesterday and not I'm getting a light on dash for the tire pressure sensor fault. It flashes for a minute or so and then goes solid. Never had this on before. Air pressure is ok. Any thought on fixing this ? The manual don't tell me much other than take to dealer so they can charge me an arm and leg.
It also might take several hours of driving for the system to reset itself. This is quite commom even when tire pressure is allowed to go low and then the tire is properly filled. The light tends to remain on for awhile. My GTI sometimes takes a day of driving before the system acknowledges the new pressures.
The sensor is either attached to the valve stem inside the tire or attached to the wheel with a metal band inside the tire. Regardless of design, either can be reset (programed) with a special tool. You can buy the tool yourself from places like Tirerack.
Any good shop that mounts tires should have one as well. The sensor should reset itself if the original sensors were re-installed. If not then the system has to be reset (programmed). The shop that did the tire install should take responsibility for this. The sensors are usually serviced (new seals installed, etc) when new tires are installed. Some sensors have to be removed to prevent damaging them with the tire removal machine. As Miles from Tirerack mentioned, most shops will charge an additional fee (for parts and labor) to service the TPMS sensors.
the tire pressure sensor attaches to the valve stem on each wheel. they need to be reset with a remote looking tool. if the installer did not do this, then i would call them. hopefully this is all that it is.
however, some tire shops go fast when removing the old tires and in doing so hit the tps sensor and damage them.
thats odd. i have the same car and mine were attached to the stem.
in that case, im guessing that you have a tire pressure sensor band and the sensor is attached to that. the answer is still yes, needs to be programmed.
I'm going back to my guy Monday. When they changes the tires he showed me the sensor on the rim. Maybe he was mistaken for the tire file plug cause I did not look real close. So if it its on the valve stem what are my steps of action to correct it ? Many thanks....Ron
if the sensors are undamaged, its best to set the tire pressures to the designated pressure on the metal plate in your driver side door jam. best to use a digital pressure guage if at all possible. once set, the shop has to put the sensors into a learning mode (i think you have to cycle the ignition key 3 times). when the horn honks, the car is in learning mode. the tool is put up to each wheel at a time and a button is pressed to reset each sensor.
You wouldn't have it. i know my technicians have them. a good tire shop should too.
if worse comes to worse, visit your local dealership and explain that you had your tires replaced and that you just need the light reset. they should do it for free if they are nice.
Sorry it took me so long to find this. Hopefully you're not still having problems. If you are, I made this thread a while back which will answer your questions regarding how to reset your TPMS Sensors.
I know this thread is 3 years old, but I'm having the exact same problem as the original person. Yesterday, I had all 4 tires replaced. When I started my car, the light was on. I went back into the shop & the guy told me to drive 20 miles or so, and it'll reset. Well, 20 miles later, instead of resetting, the light starts blinking, and says 'tire pressure sensor fault'. I took it back to the shop today & one of the sensors isn't reading on the machine. The shop is telling me that it's a coincidence that the sensor went out when they replaced the tires. I'm saying that it was fine when I got there, but broken when I left. Is it possible for the tech to have broken the sensor? I have a 2010 SES.
Until someone takes the tire off & replaces the sensor you can't tell. Sensor comes out obviously freshly damaged, then you know it was an accident when replacing the tire.
Same problem here. Annoying messages on dashboard but tire pressures are all OK. Is there a way to just get rid of the error message? I don't need some superfluous indicator that will cost an arm and a leg to fix only to have to go through it again next time some tire jockey screws up the next one.
Let me look into this further. What’s the mileage on your vehicle? I’ll be happy to look into available options to assist.
In the meantime, let me document your product feedback. Please PM your full name, VIN, dealer, and best daytime phone number.
Have a great day! []
