In my opinion the best wheel and tire calculator. Tire Calculator

Snow is just around the corner in the northern states, thought this might come in handy.

I need some help! I am not 100% sure of all this technical stuff and I am totally lost with offsets. I have a 2012 Focus Ti with the 18" rims. Next winter, I am planning on getting 17" rims and winter tires, all with factory specs to ensure proper fit. If I was get a 215/50R17 winter tire and 17" rims with a 50mm offset, would that be acceptable? Why would anyone get a 40mm or 45mm offset when the factory 17" rim has a 50mm offset? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

With a lower offset wheel, the face of the wheel hub moves closer to the dead center line of the wheel. The more positive the offset, the farther past the center line of the wheel the wheel hub goes, so the wheels are, "pulled into," the car. The more negative the offset, the farther out the wheels are, "pushed." Many people will switch to lower offset wheels so as to achieve a wider track (either for visual effect or for perceived improvement in handling/grip). How far out the outside face of a wheel/tire combination actually goes depends on two factors, the width of the wheels/tires and the offset. If you want to keep the outside face in a similar place while switching to narrower wheels, you'd get lower positive offset to do so. So as an example, say your current wheels are +50mm offset, 18" diameter and 8" wide. If you switch to wheels that are 17" diameter by 7" wide, the wheels are 0.5" narrower to the center line from the outside and from the inside. 0.5" is approximately 12.7mm, so in order to achieve a similar visual appearance, you'd have to choose wheels with a +40 or +35 offset. Does that make sense?

By far the best calculator / comparison tool I've found on the Internet, and it's free:

http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

I've spent many hours in there, tweaking specs to see exactly how things will fit on this car. Especially useful when you use the left side to input stock wheel/tire sizes.

Got my 18x8/5x108/+40 Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's mounted up today on a set of 235/40/18 BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2's today.

Why the cheesy German front plate?

BTW, I saw these on a Volvo at the local Ford dealership when my girlfriend and I were buying her new car in Germany and I think they look pretty awesome. They apparently only come in 18x8 though so it might be a tight fit. The silver and darker silver part of the spokes looks much darker in real life and I think it would be a good look.

Im a Dealer for most every rim on the market and I can tell you for sure theres a very small selection for wheels in a price range that is even plausible... Asanti on a Focus, they wont even allow that lol.

Trust me on this I called all the major players and only a very small few has 42+ offset 5x108 wheels. Not to mention hubcentric

Neh just the Sports. The Comp-2s are an extra 50-70 per and that just wasn't justifiable when I could get the Sports on clearance and they still get raving reviews. Which, I'll say indeed they do the job so far. At speed corners with no squeal, and all sticky. [thumb] I'm sure the Comp-2 are well worth the money! But the Sports keep an extra $200 in my pocket and still put a smile on my face. [:)]

Thanks,I wanted (my wife wanted) wheels that were a little understated and less "look at me" since I wanted the wheels to enhance the car's looks and not dominate it. Can't wait to get my spoiler ordered but that's a couple of months off since we laid out a lot for the wheels/tires.

17x7 with 215/50s which is the OEM sizes. The fitment is pretty good but I wouldn't mind a set of Eiback pro-kit springs which is said to give it a .8" drop which would take that gap away nicely.

Help please!!! I have a question regarding winter tires and appropriate size. I am a litte unfamiliar when is comes to changing size from the original manufacture. For my previous card, I have always used the original rims and swapped only the tires for the winter. I have a Focus Titanium with the 18" rims. I am looking at purchasing a separate set of winter tires and rims but in size 17". I assume going with the "standard" Titanium tire size of 215/50R17 would be the best while using 17X7 rims with a proper offset. Can anyone provide any tips or advice on this? I don't want any issues and I figured using the size that Ford uses for the standard Ti rim/tire would be most appropriate.

Search for an online tire calculator, you can enter the 2 different tire sizes and it will tell you the differences, mainly if your speedo will be off. Another option is to put your info into tirerack.com, select the appropriate 17x7 wheel, and click 'shop for tires'. They'll show you the best recommended size and they are typically dead on right.
