205/45-17 Vs 205/40-17?

Is there big difference between the 2? im trying to get new rims n tires...an it says focus is recomended 205/45-17 an all the ones i like comes with 205/40-17 whats the difference can someone help?

215/40 or 205/45 is the way to go.

Why not 205/40. is the sidewall too shallow or something?

not enough sidewall. this means less load capacity, a rougher ride, and less protection for those rims you just invested some good $$$ in. 205/45/17 is also as close to the stock 205/50/16 as you're going to get, meaning you speedo won't be as far off and all that.

most shops will recommend the 205/45/17 over the 215/40/17, but i think either works just as well. 215/40/17 gives you a bigger patch, though.

I have 205/40 and it's rolling great! The load capacity is the same as any high performance tire. And the ride is not that rough (I have the stock suspension tho).

You should go with 205/45 or 215/40 if you have the stock suspension only because it will fill up more of the gap between the wheel and the fender.
