There have been a few with just enough offset to put the wheels right at the wheel well lip.

I've looked into this. The problem is finding the right spacer. 5mm and 15mm are the commonly available sizes. 5 doesn't do it, and 15 puts you at effective offset of 37.5mm. That could look sweet, but has a VERY good chance of rubbing.

No you dont need an alignment after wheel spacers, You are only changing you track width and not your toe, camber or ride height.

so would the 5 mm spacers help with the tire looking flush with the fender? does this affect tire wear in any way?

yeah i was just looking to try and make it flush with the rear wheel well lip. So 5 would probably be the best without worrying about rubbing.
