2003 ZTS Tires

I got a 2003 ZTS in December of last year. It had 60,000 miles on it and was in great shape. It's a great little car. EXCEPT these tires. When I got them, a friend of mine that's a mechanic told me they were low profile tires, and they looked really nice and new.

When I took a trip to Chicago in March, my brother in law rotated my tires and said I needed to start thinking about 2 new back tires. I was confused, since I thought they were nice and new. I said I'd start thinking about them, and took my trip. Now I can definitely tell there's a problem with the tires. When it rains, I can't even really take the interstate because my car will start to slide. It shakes. I'm constantly having to put air in them. But, looking up prices, I'm not impressed with tire prices for this car considering I had a Nissan Maxima before (and paid about $50-60 bucks per tire. Now I'm coming up with $125-200 per tire), so it's kind of a disappointment and the excitement about the Focus is definitely wearing off.

I dont WANT low profile tires on my car. I want regular all season tires that I feel safe in. I travel a lot, I got the Focus because I thought I'd get great gas mileage without having to be in something that I felt unsafe in (IE, the Smart Car is just too small for me) Is this even possible on this car? I started looking it up, but keep finding complaints on how quickly the Focus goes through tires, etc. I thought this would be a good place to ask a few thoughts on tires?

Thanks much in advance!!

The Focus is especially suspectible to rear tire wear because of the allowable rear alignment settings. There are some settings that are well within allowed specifications that will promote tire wear. You need to start with a good alignment. In the rear that means getting the rear "toe-in" down to the minimum allowable. ASK (they won't do it unless you do so) the technician for the minimum SVT rear "toe-in" setting which is 0.04 inches. Also if rear camber is more than -1.5 degrees seriously consider getting a rear camber adjustment devise (camber cannot be adjusted as delivered from the factory). Camber bolts is the cheapest way of accomplishing this.

With regards to tires it's hard to make a recommendation unless we know your current wheel size. Since your car is a ZTS I'm assuming you have 16" wheels and the normal tire size is 205/50-16. I suggest looking at Tireracks web site for one of the broader tire selections available. Another tire size that's not perfect but works well and tends to be a little cheaper is 205/55-16. If mileage is your primary concern look at all-season touring tires. They also tend to cost a little less but get the best mileage for a little loss of performance (aka grippy-ness).

I put Kumho Ecsta ASTs on my zts last year, and they have been great. My car used to be very "squirrely" on the highway when it rained, but now it's as stable as can be. I got them for about $50 apiece on tirerack.com (in the stock 205/50R16 size). I have found, over the past six years, that you have to rotate the tires every 5,000 miles religiously, or it will eat the rear tires.

Try TireRack.com. You can search by tire size, then sort by price. They have plenty of ratings and reviews, so you know what to expect. It might seem like a hassle ordering tires online, but the prices are worth it. They can also recommend a shop in your area, and ship the tires directly there.
