Ugh to add to my troubles... How might this be fixed myself?

So I put my summer wheels on my car the other day... driving home from work today I felt the need to have them balanced at firestone...

They come out to tell me that theres play in my passenger side inner tie rod... And they attempt to sell me a new one... $600! They try to tell me the rack and pinion needs to come out to have this done. Knowing better I call ford, who says its about $300 without an alignment... (Yay for a lifetime warranty on my alignment elsewhere).

However... on an 07 SES, how hard of a job is it to replace the inner tie rod? Any of you have any ideas? My friend works at a foreign car repair shop and we can use his garage after hours if need be... sicne a ford the owner doesn't care (thank god its not a porsche).

Anyway if any of you could tell me how this is done so we could do this that would be awesome... well really just so *I* could know I am sure my friend knows how lol

Don't qoute me on this but I believe a LITTLE play is acceptable.

I did this 3 years ago but don't recall how..

I think 300 is to much btw.. Maybe something like 100 It's not a bad job on my 03.
