Tires Too Soon....

Boy, has my spring clean-up/tune-up become alot bigger than I planned! I just noticed the new tires I bought just before my move from Winnipeg to Vancouver are already worn out. I bought a socond set of Continental Extremecontacts 10,000kms (6200 miles) ago and the rears are already down to the wear bars on the outside tread and the inside's not that far behind. I got a 4-wheel alignment because the passanger front had shown signs of wear on the inside. The tech said it was because the rear was way out. After getting the car back I thought is was worse feeling than before and took it back. They said it was still in spec, but they would readjust to the specs I got of a thread on this site. F/Camber -1.8/.07, F/Caster 2.0/4.1, F/Toe 0.00/-0.08, R/Camber -2.3/.03, R/Toe .04/.11. It still didn't feel right. In fact I did notice when I went over Tared spider cracks on the local freeway the rear would jump around bad in the wet. Does anyone have an opinion on what's wrong?

Check that! They are worn pretty evenly across the tread.

That was a very poor alignment. There's absolutely no reason why they should be able to get at least the toe specs much more even (a hundredth or two variance side to side is normal). There's not much you can adjust for camber or caster. Something looks rather strange on the right front and rear though. Rarely does a focus have positive camber and you have it on both the front and rear on that side. On the left side (I'm assuming the first number is left and the following number is right) you have negative camber on both wheels with a bunch in the rear (-2.3*). Its easy to see why your experiencing some unusual handling.

Camber bolts are probably needed for the rear. These would reduce the negative camber and allow you to get some negative camber on the right side. My recommendation is to keep rear camber under -1.5.* Ask for front toe to be as close to zero as possible on each side and erroring on the toe-OUT side if necessary. Rear toe-IN should be set as close to 0.08" as possible.

Once again, get each side as close as possible to each other. A few hundredths (.01 to .02) difference is a reasonable maximum tolerance for toe and camber. I'm not sure what to tell you about the uneven caster numbers. One side is at the min. and the other at the max. for the allowable spec range which is 2.0* to 4.1*. There really isn't a reason for that that big of a side to side discrepancy unless you bent something (a control arm as an example). Is it possible you quoted the specified range from the printout rather than the actual setting?
