lsd=limited shift differential? If so then yes, one tire spins more than the other

It is an open diff. but the car is well balanced there for it will spin both tires most of the time. There is a company that makes a limited slip for the svt. I believe its quaffie?

No, SVTF doesn't have a LSD. Quaife or Torsen make aftermarket LSD's for the SVTF... if you try searching a little you will find quite a bit of info on these parts.

thanks for all your help but i still dont really understand why both my tires were spinning all the way through first till about redline....i did it in my work parking lot and sure enough 2 tire marks for about 15 feet.....is there any other way besiedes ripping the tranny apart to see if it has one..i bought the car used and i would think the owner would have said something....its a plus to most.

With the front wheels off the ground and in nuetral spin one wheel, if the other front wheel spins in the opposite direction you have an open diff. If the wheel spins the same direction then you may have a lsd. To make darn sure hold one wheel and try to spin the other wheel, if the other wheel spins then you have an open diff or a worn out lsd.

Its probably the traction control...the car uses the ABS system to monitor the wheels, and when it detects one spinning it applies the brake on that side to bring it under control. It partially balances out the natural tendency for the power to take the path of least resistance via the wheel with the least amount of grip, however it comes at the expense of the brake(s) being applied at the same time you're trying to accelerate.

A good test to see if you have a LSD (short of what's already been suggested) is cut the wheel all the way in either direction and hammer on the gas. If one wheel spins and the other stays stationary, you have the stock open differential. If both spin or you take off without spinning, you probably have a LS.

And yes...I would think the previous owner would've mentioned something because the LSDs for the Getrag box run around $1000. If I ever sell my Focus privately that's going to be mentioned and included in the sale price, and I have the cheaper $700 MTX-75 Quaife installed in mine.
