Exclamation Alternator

Hey, I keep having to replace my TP sensor because it keeps going out. I took my car into the dealer for the 3rd time just yesterday. Anyway, there was a thread a couple weeks ago called 5500 and lights out. They all recommended checkin the alternator.... I pointed this out to the dealer asking him to have the tech check that out. I guess it was putting out 18.6 volts up at the top of the RPM's! Isn't it only supposed to put out 14.4? at the max. Has anyone else had a prob like this? Any input will help. Maybe my TP sensors were ok just the alternator was making them read wrong in the machine. I dunno....I don't have any warranty so i spend a lot of my money on that car, its getting old. Thanks

Alts should never go past 16VDC. Any more voltage than that will severly damage any and all electronic devices in a vehicle. Ecu, Radio, Air bag controll module, and most sensors. Some thing is most definitely wrong with the regulater in your alt. I wouldn't start that car untill the alt was fixed..Lucky the car hasn't cought on fire yet.

Just replace the alt. Shouldn't be to hard. That should fix the car. Sucks that the alt and regulator are one unit. Even if just one or the other is messed up you end up changing the whole thing

Be careful....

I agree, at more than 16VDC you might start melting wires and connectors.....

I have not seen anyone else with this problem...Good luck

Andy

so, does everyone think that when the rpms on my tach go screwy after i've been driving faster than everyday driving, that it's the alternator?

What? Your tach doesn't have anything to do with your alt.
