Drilling out the weight and stacking washers to tweak the counterweight to the shifter is pretty much the best way to go about this. I've never driven an SVT with the counterweight removed and liked how it felt. It's sloppy, no matter how much the shift knob weighs.

A heavier shift knob will need less counterweight, but no counterweight is still going to be sloppy.

Just my $.02...I did this a long time ago, and never did like the notchy feel. I put the piece back in today and it feels so much smoother and better to me. Takes a slight bit more of effort, but it feels a lot less like something is broken - feels more like it is supposed to feel.

I do prefer smooth-shifting gearboxes, but I still run no counterweight, and an extremely lightweight delrin knob. Gets the job done for me - since I find the best way to have consistent & quick shifts is to be able to feel the gates in the knob.

Maybe I should play with the stacking washers sometime.

I just took mine off and drove around with it off, and really do not like the notchyness. I am going to put it back on.

I keep the counterweight off because of the 'clunk-clunk' feel that it creates. The best knob I've had on the car is a heavily-weighted Razo leather palm grip, which was excellent. (The heavier the knob, the more 'directional' your throws become.) But I'll stick with the SVT-logoed knob on the car now because it just looks too good to not use.

Haha I didn't know anyone else here forked over the cash for TWM knobs.
I love how that knob makes shifting feel. It definitely requires less effort.

I was apprehensive to pay Twm prices, but 4 plus years later and it's still one of my favorite mods. Love shifting the svtf. Awesome customer service too. They sent me the thread pitch sleeves for a mustang, which didn't work and gladly sent me the proper sleeves.

Have you tried adjusting the shifter?

Another thing that commonly breaks is this clip
