MPG and other ramblings

Well I suppose my SVTF is fully "broken in", I have just reached 17,000 miles. My latest mpg with mixed city and highway driving is 27.335. This is with the winter tires on it, and I guess I would gain a mpg or two with the stock conti's.

I have noticed in the last few 1,000 miles my exhaust has taken on a different tone. It now seems to be lower pitched and a bit more throaty, it sounds great, and I find my self riding around with the window down more now, so I can hear the great sound it makes. The car just seems to be getting better with age.

While cleaning under the hood the other day I noticed a huge build up of salt on the pass side between the upper fender apron and the coolant tank, and on the drivers side just in front of the air box snorkle. I mean the stuff was really packed in there. So you folks living in the north where they use salt on the raods, I would suggest you ckeck this out. I broke the chunks up with a screw driver (don't scratch the paint) and then hosed those areas off with lots of water. I think there should be some type of splash shield under there to keep this from happening.

Where your struts connect under the hood in the engine compartment, there is a hole on the front-side where you can see into the wheel-well area, I was getting mud splashing up into the engine compartment through these holes on each side.....just take some silicone based sealent (the kind in the big tubes that you use the calking gun with) and fill those holes on each side up...problem solved =)

I was going to start a new thread, but since yours has MPG in the title, I figured I could tag my crap along:

This being my first new car, and the fact that there is a penholder, I have been keeping track of all the fuel and mileage. Nerd Alert!!!

Since I am a big proponent of synthetic oils, I though this would be a good way to get some real world data…and give back to the Internet community who has given me hours and hours of porn and videos of things such as a little dog humping a Pikachu stuffed animal. Glorious!

TEST NOTES:
At first I got gas at 2 or 3 stations, but didn't top off at all. But after the first month or so
I started to go to the same pump or 2 at the local Chevron. Premium was $2.46 today!!! This was to try and add some control/consistency to the test.

The first few times I did not record the dates, but I got the car in late November.

3 Road Trips:
To San Diego on Dec.24 and again on Dec.31 (I LOVE SAN DIEGO!!!)
To Prescott, AZ on Jan. 16.

During these trips was when I was getting the 29-31mpg.

On December 6th I did 4 laps at Willow Springs Raceway (Big Track). http://www.alltimeracing.homestead.c...6Saturday.html
Hit about 100mph before the brakes for Turn 1, about 105mph into Turn 8, all the time keeping revs below 6000rpm because the car barely had 1000miles on it!!!

I put in a K&N air filter sometime in early December.

I used 40 PSI in all tires for the first trip to SD and have tried to keep it there ever since.

My normal weekday involves about 15 freeway miles and 5 city miles to work, and about 10 city miles for lunch. So the average day is about 30 freeway and 20 city miles.

Oil and filter at 1000 miles, Castrol 5w-30, Car Quest Filter

Oil and Filter at 3415 miles, Castrol 5w-30, Car Quest Filter

Oil and Filter at 6340 miles, Mobil 1 5w-30 Full Synth, Car Quest Filter

Why the Car Quest filters??? They are the only car store in town, but they did say they had a $4 Brand X filter and a $7 CQ filter. I went with the $7 filter…

****************************
This is just a preview of whats to come. I will not make any changes until the next oil change at 10,000miles. Then I will decide to either:

Change the Transaxle fluid to full synthetic (Mobil 1, Royal P, Red Line)
or
Add Militec-1 to engine oil

The average is 26.664mpg. So far the first tank with Mobil 1 oil is looking promising with a 27.345mpg, but seeing as how I got a 27.050mpg earlier in February, this means nothing. The next few tanks will really put the Mobil 1 to the test, it does say on the bottle you will get better mileage. Also, the car could be breaking in more too, soo, take this for what it is...

I will continue to use Mobil 1, I will change the oil out at 10,000 miles and then change the oil at 5,000 mile intervals.

Any comments? Suggestions? Should I get a life?

Cheers
Ray

I just wonder if those aren't drain holes of some sort.

WoW those are really good milages, i'm only getting approx 23mpg, approx 255 miles to the tank, which i think sucks cause i do do quite alot of highway driving, and i don't always rev to high usually shift around 3-3.5k rpm, i don't understand how come so many other SVTF's are getting such a better MPG then mine! sorry for the rant just trying to feel sorry for myself!

Yeah, slip.. I'm the same. I have all highway miles, and shift under 4k most of the time, and my gas mileage is about 300 miles per tank..I don't get it?? This isn't any better than my supercharged mustang!
