I have some new info on the Torsen vs Quaife question!!

This is to all the SVT owners who have been drooling for the new Torsen to come out at a cheaper price point than the Quaife is for the SVT.

Ok so I know a guy, who for a living engineers diff's. Mainly locking high end ones. Well he now works for Getrag doing engineering work. He also owns a Focus SVT, and I talk with him quite a bit about our rides. I bring up the amazing deal the Ford Racing Torsen will be at like $700.00 compared to the overly expensive Quaife diff, and he whips out info like perry mason!

Quote:
I think your only difference will be 2.5:1 bias v. 4.5:1 bias. The Quaife almost guarantees traction during split traction events due to the amount of gears that are required to rotate in so many different axis. A torsen will wear in such that on a split, you can still do a 1-legger.
to me. that makes the quaife worth every penny. if the torsen doesn’t do that much... well WTF are you spending the money on? or are you getting exactly what you paid for?

Comments? ;)

hmm that is very interesting, but no offense to your source, i'd like a confirmation from a second source or even torsen/quaife. again im not saying he is wrong, i'd just think a second opinion is definitely a good thing. either way i think the torsen will be a good thing because it'll sure drag the price of the quaife down a bit at least.

could you ask him what the difference is in the zetec one too?

Well one thing this site and many others are not getting too redily is actual factory data on engineering specs for parts. I am taking what I can get at this point, besides some engineering data is still better than hype and speculation that has been thrown around so far. With most people just claiming the only difference between the 2 is the quality of the casing and the warranty...

Ill ask him if he knows anything about the Zetec 5 speed torsen

ask him if he can get a tear down manual for the getrag tranny. ford doesn't have one, and I'd definitely like to get one if I ever need to rebuild my trans in the future.

he cant, I asked. Getrag is very careful about who gets access to what. The engineers only have access to the engeneering prints for the product they are working on, and sometimes only the part they are working on.

Hes been working hard to get full torque/HP limits as tested by Getrag (not the ones posted on their site which is the recommeneded limits) and cant get those either.

THeres hardly an english way to explain how an ATB diff works. A Quiaffe or Torsen are not Limited Slip Differentials. They are Auto Torque Bias diffs. What it means is that via the ring gear, there is X amount of torque being fed to the diff. Then based on hexial cut gears meshing with eachother and additional gears, and the fluid in the diff the friction in those gears causes a ratio of the torque to go to the wheel that is rotating slower than the other.

This works until one wheel is off the ground, if that happens an ATB diff acts like an open diff since there is no longer any resistance between the hexial cut gears inside the diff. Its a complex and non intuitive process, but works VERY well. The ratio of the torque bias thats able to be transfered in the diff's is a function of how the gears are cut, and the angles of the hexial gears inside.

A Limited slip diff is much more simple. All that does is essentially use clutch plates, or a Viscus coupling (with a oil that onder sheer forces thickens up) to limit the rotational differences between one side and the other. This is simple but they do burn out over time (the clutch plate style). a Phatom grip thing is a VERY VERY bad version of a LSD... its hardly able to be considered a LSD... but its sort of a clutch plate style just based on how it works.

TO make it simple it makes both wheels spin instead of one it splits the power between the 2.
