Considering complete rebuild...Questions...

Hey guys, I recently discovered my headgasket went. After I pulled the head off, I'm considering rebuilding the whole motor. I say that because I just got the car and have no idea what kind of shape the bottom end is in. There was a stripped cam cap bolt which I ruined the cam cap getting out and after researching where to buy cam caps, I discovered that they are apparently head specific. Is that the case? I need the experts (you guys) opinions. I'm in no hurry to rebuild so I guess I can grab the necessary parts over time. I'm new to the 4 cylinder game. I'm an old v-8 muscle type of guy. Do people bore these things out? I ask that because there wasn't much room in between pistons. Thanks guys

Moved this down to SVT Performance for more info. on the engine questions.

Cam caps are very valuable on this type twin cam engine, they are kept in their locations by number as the head is line bored for the cams with them installed. One damaged beyond repair makes the whole head nothing but a source for odd parts officially.

IDK if you'd ever be lucky enough to find one to fit close enough from another damaged head.

These can be bored/honed when worn to the point of needing it, but pistons to match the special SVT rods could be a problem. AFAIK any who end up going larger do replacement pistons and rods for the modification.

Sorry to hear about the cam cap... not sure, but you might need a different head.

As far as boring, you can go 0.7mm over and be safe, and get over-bore pistons that fit [CFM]. If you do, just bump compression with a suitable head shave (or thinner gasket), and your tune will be fine. You can also get a smaller idler [Massive Speed System] for the timing belt to keep your tensioner happy after the shave (gasket).

As always, great info guys. Are replacement heads for these SVT's fairly easy to come by? I checked autozones website and I think I found the right one. Could u verify the link? http://m.autozone.com/external-engin...73_0?location=

If that head is the one I need, I will place the order soon. My plan for the car is to get it rebuilt to run reliable. I don't plan on racing or anything like that. Some fun every now and then but mostly to commute back and forth for work.

You dont want to raise the compression any with out also tuning the SVT

I have SVT heads and I have cam caps , I have had luck in the past finding other cam caps that work , it just take time to fit them , Like Sailor said the caps are line bored specifically to that head , If one knows what there doing and has enough other cam caps there is a 90% chance it can work

I doubt Autozone has the SVT head more then likely just the Zetec head , I would check it closely , your link didnt work for me

Yes you can bore the engine , find all your parts first , buying parts for the SVT is very hard to do because most say its SVT and it isnt , there are no OE over size pistons out there , if you want to change pistons you will have to go forged and either do custom forged to fit the stock SVT rods or go to eagle rods and forged pistons and have to decide what you want to do about compression , no one makes a 10-10.5 compression forged piston

Let me know if you have any questions

Tom

Last I heard Ford has 1 or 2 heads left, price in the thousands if still avail..

To replace/repair you need to work with someone like Tom, post a WTB here and/or check the BST section, check on Focal Jet, or find one through a recycler (Speedway Motors in WI specializes, not cheap but many items avail..)

Doubt you'd find a rebuild through typical sources.

Mileage on car is 189,xxx but I'm unsure if motor has the same. Headgasket was supposedly just redone and had an over heating issue due to loose coolant hose which caused another blown head gasket.

I don't really know what I am doing, nor do I have any extra camp caps laying around. Tom, u said you have SVT heads or did i mis read ur post? If you you, what are you willing to let a head go for?

I have SVT heads both new in the box from Ford or rebuilt

I would try to fix yours , its worth a shot and I have about 75-80 SVT cam caps

If we can fix yours I charge 75.00 for the cap and fitting it , you will still need a valve job

If yours can be fixed I do a complete SVT rebuild for 1995.00 + a rebuildable core or if you want to keep your SVT engine we can rebuild it
