Intake tuning valve cycling?

Posting for a friend. He has a 03 SVT Focus with approx 36,000 miles and has just started hearing a cycling noise coming from the driver side of the engine bay. More specifically the sound, sounds like a small motor cycling up and down upon start-up just below the battery box. The noise is constant and stays on from start-up to shut down.

He dropped the car off at the dealer this morning and they said it was the intake manifold motor was stuck on. The quote for the repair was a tad over $800. I did some research on the problem and came up with "intake tuning valve" as the possible culprit.

Has anyone experienced this valve staying on and "cycling" upon startup to shut down? Is their a fix other than the dealers $800 solution? Where exactly is it located? Vacuum line associated? Etc....

Thanks for all replys, we would like to get the car in the air and try and tackle this with minimal cost.

Jake

Moved to “SVT Performance Chat”...
The part you're referring to is technically called the IMRC.
(Intake Manifold Runner Control)
It's not that hard to replace, and certainly nowhere near $800.

The IMRC controls the DSI (Dual Stage Intake).
Some times, its the DSI clip on the intake manifold that breaks, causing the IMRC to cycle repeatedly.

Other times, the IMRC goes whacko and starts cycling anytime it wants.
Try searching for IMRC, and DSI.
There's alot of information on both items.
