Useful Transmission seal info

Just gonna post this up in case anyone else runs into this problem.

I had a leaking trans differential side seal (the one where the axle goes into the transaxle) I called the local dealer to order a new one, and the problems began.

Problem number one, the guy I talked to wasn't able to find a 6 speed transmission, and kept insisting I either had a MTX-75 or an IB5 (both of which are obviously 5-speeds)

So I decided to contact FordParts.com, and ask them on their 'contact us' e-mail to look it up for me. No answer from them for a few days, in which time I had realized we have a Ford Parts Specialist amongst us, (B16sir1991) I contacted him, and he was able to provide the part numbers I needed. A day after that Fordparts.com replied to my e-mail with the same numbers, so I figured I was good to go.

I ordered the part I needed, the right side trans seal and when it came in, I pulled my car apart to replace it, and discovered the seal was too big.

I was totally ticked off, since I had just pulled apart my suspension for no reason and had to put it back together again without fixing my leak.

After I calmed down, I figured out that the seal I got was the seal for the Drivers side, even though the part was the correct number for the Passenger side according to 3 different sources.

Ok, for those of you that actually read all that, here's the info I promised.

The RIGHT SIDE seal part number is 2M5Z-1177-AA and is a 36 millimeter seal

The LEFT SIDE seal part number is 2M5Z-1177-BA and is a 40 millimeter seal

This is opposite of what comes up in the catalogs every where I checked (California, Texas and Florida) so I imagine it's backwards everywhere.

Anyway, just figured I'd post this up, since its been a very frustrating time getting this leak fixed, not due to the actual repair, just due to the pain in the butt its been getting the correct part.

I'd also like to thank B16sir1991 for zipping me over the part number for both sides, which really helped while dealing with the ordering, even if they were listed backwards (not his fault, obviously)

Very good info, and I will be checking those seals from time to time along with the CV joint boots ... hate when those things tear and fling grease everywhere, and if you don't catch it in time they wear out real fast.

Yep, catch those torn boots before you end up ruining the joint. (under hard driving, you can kill a joint in 7 hours running time)

By the way, the reason my seal failed in the first place, was due to the axle being installed carelessly when the dealer did my clutch TSB. So anyone who has that job done may want to check under the car a few days later and look for oil near the lowest part of the trans. (where the rear mount is)

I would have brought it back to them and made them deal with it, but to be honest, I'm really uncomfortable about anyone else touching my car anyway, so I just fixed it myself.

LEFT and RIGHT are relative - is this the problem?

Just a thought about all this:

If looking into the engine bay (rather than from the driver's seat) then one might call your left "right" and visa-vera". Prehaps Ford should use something like "air box side" or "short shaft or long shaft" to better name the seal?

Well if you order a left axle you do indeed get the left one. They just fat fingered the seal number. I always order both since they are so cheap.

So these part numbers are from Ford or from a parts place?
