Whine noise from front end at 88mph

I was driving back from Road Atlanta last night, which was awesome. After a while I got bored of music and shut it off. I started to notice, just around 88mph, there was a slight high pitched whine like noise coming from the front end of the car. Only around that speed. I tried 5th gear, but had no luck making the noise. I have no idea what it was, but it really isn't very loud. I have the sunroof closed and no A/C to hear it.

You're T/B makes the noise. I assume you're running an aftermarket intake? Mine whines from about 3,500 rpm to about 5,000rpm. If you don't like it you can change that by porting your T/B there is a write up on FJ about it.

No, I have a stock intake.

This was happeneing only at 88 mph. A little slower or fastrer and it was gone.

I listened for it this morning on the way to work and couldn't hear it. But, it was pretty windy.

Also, has anyone else noticed a wind noise from the wipers at high speed (>90)? Maybe it is the wiper blades I have, but if I sweep them, it goes away.

Well for real. Does it sound like a small turbo? I think I know its the T/B man, try and running it at the same rpm (around 4k) in another gear and listen close. Just put it around there and tap the gas a little, you'll hear it. Its the way our T/B is designed. It whines.

My wipers make a whistling noise (like at 65+)... you said it goes away when you flick them, so I'm guessing they are the culprit.

What are you doing driving 88 on public roads?

Did you try what I recommended? Run it at the same RPM you are running at 88mph and see if you hear the same noise, I almost gaurentee that its the intake t/b whistle.

No, I will try that tomorrow. What is wierd, is that it doesn't seem to be like that kind of a noise. It sounds like a small electric motor that is only on at that speed. It is not something that comes on or off slowly. It is on at that speed, when I sped up a little it is completely gone. When I sloew back to 88, it is back on. Really strange.

It's obvious that the flux capacitor is TRYING to work, but it must not be getting the 1.61 Gigawatts of energy it needs to make the leap into the time continuim. Maybe his lightning rod isn't adjusted correctly. Hopefully you aren't using low grade plutonium.
