I know I am beating a dead horse, and this thread has been made a thousand times but any help I could get would be great. I get this strange noise at around 3,000 -3,500 RPMs either when I down shift or I am in nuetral and I am braking. It is like a deep grumble, and it doesn't sound that nice either. I was wondering is this my heat shield?

Thanks again.

When you downshift, are you slowing down also, or just coasting? Where does the noise seem to be coming from?

What the hell is a grumble!?? Girgle + Rumble = Some f----ing sound I have never heard! If it is poping in the exhaust at the 3,000 mark it is the car running rich. If not, then ask jeeves!!

have you ever had a check engine light?.. if its P0171 and you have that sound coming with it, its probably running rich due to a leak in the intake manifold... some 02's had this problem because the clamps are snap clamps... like cv joint boot style, but now... and i think with the 03 you should have an anctual hose clamp... with ability to tighten it and everything., also if it turns out the grumble is just a rattle, i have a little resonance in the exhaust at that rpm, and if its more than just a rattle, there is a revised exhaust bracket... you need this if your car makes noises when its not even on... like if you shut the door after you get out and you hear the exhaust or somthing rattle
I lit it on fire... twice.
