Exhaust cam gear tuned

Finally got around to installing my exhaust cam gear last weekend, and I just got back from the dyno today.

Before anyone looks at the dyno, please remind yourself that this was done on a Dynapak, NOT a Dynojet...so the numbers are lower than what you would expect. I however, don't care about numbers so I don't have a problem with this. I just wanted to dial the gear in.

For the first run, the operator only took it to what shows to be 6000 RPM. Subsequent runs were taken to 7000 RPM. Also, because of how the Dynapak is set up, the nasty bog at about 2000 RPM really needs to be cut out but I'm too lazy. The RPM readings are off due to the gear ratio input into the dyno. In reality, the car was brought to redline....so ~6900 RPM correlates to about 7600 RPM. Sorry for all the disclaimers, but it is what it is.

I won't complain about an extra 7.5 lb-ft and 5.4 hp. In reality though, the hp gain was higher due to the baseline run's spike (so maybe 6 hp?). The maximum gains were found at about 4 degrees retarded or so (the tick marks on the Kent gear are hard to see clearly). I'm pretty happy

Oh and, as you've probably noticed, the numbers in the yellow and green boxes don't exactly correlate, they are reversed. So for torque, green is baseline and yellow is tuned. For HP, yellow is baseline and green is tuned.

What can I say, its hard to find qualified dyno operators...I wish he just would have let me do it since he was doing like three other things, but I can understand why he didn't

Install = $free.99 (who wants to pay someone else to do what you can?)
Dyno = $125 for the hour

I was considering the kent cam gear set up also. Those are really good gains. would you consider that one of your best bang for your bucks mod?

I paid $90 for the gear on Ebay, it was brand new. If you can't find a second-hand one, Focus Sport is the only other place that I know of in the states to carry them. I think they are selling them for $135.

The gains are good, but I wouldn't say its the best bang for the buck. If you are on a budget, I'd start with a tune (about the same price as a new gear and dyno time anyway) and get better gains across the entire rev range. I'd consider the cam gear to be a final mod. I know, I don't have an intake anymore, but I'll get around to it. I was going to wait for the FS cams to put this on, but being the eternal pessimist I am, I figured I'd stop holding my breath.

Still, I'm pretty happy with the gains. From what I've been hearing, these are about the same kind of gains you can expect with the RT cat.
