short ram vs drop in in stock airbox

So I've been reading around the forum and I've heard that dyno results show that a drop in air filter in the stock air box is only 1-3 horse power less then a short ram intake. Also I've heard about taking the resonator our of the stock system? It would make more noise and some people say better throttle response. Has anyone done this? The only reason I'm asking is I was going to buy a K&N short ram for my SVTF but if I can just buy a drop in yank the resonator and get similar results and save $200 that would be nice. Just want to know what some people have done/ opinions on the matter.

Drop in without removing the resonator.

Removing that adds to the noise, doesn't add HP, could hurt low end a touch.

I just purchased a K&N panel filter, $45 shipped from Amazon. The rear panel on the box doesn't give hp numbers, but gives air flow differences. K&N cone filter flows 881 cfm vs. 545 cfm for an "Average disposable aftermarket" filter. K&N panel filter flows 441 cfm vs. 319 cfm for the "Average disposable... etc.

Reading old threads here people couldn't wait to yank the stock box and put a short heat sucking cone filter on. Mine has that "mod". Try monitoring intake air temps on a hot summer day in stop and go traffic. The intake sound is neat at throttle, but it seems the consensus is that a stock box and drop in filter is the best of both worlds. If only I could find a stock setup cheap enough to put back on mine...

I've heard people say they used a cone filter and just took the top off of the air box and left the bottom as a half ass heat shield but I don't know if that it the best idea or if I'm better playing it safe with just a drop in k&n drop in paper replacement

I fitted a piper cross filter to my ST which made an overall gain in all round performance. Both low down feels better (before 3000rpm) and high end revs are just crazy (as is the sound).



I also fitted a cold air intake feed to mine, so when moving cold air flow circulates around the filter.



Although having done this I am about to change it all.
