strange smell

Hey guys
Just got home from racing around town trying to get my a** along w/ 2 others kids a**'s home b4 12. Lets say the driving was...spirited to say the least. anyway, it was really my first time pushing the car hard, and everything was great, until i got out once i was home. i smelled the weird smell from outside. it wasnt the clutch, at least i dont think, 1 because i was rather good on the clutch, no high rev starts or anything abusive, and 2 because i know the smell. It almost smelled like the way my shop did last nite when i helped a kid cut down an exhaust tip and i did some drilling, like burning metal, or finger oils, or sumthin. could someone let me know what the could POSSIBLY be. i know it could be a lot, but somewhat common. maybe my brakes? i was hard on them, and they are maybe only 500 miles on the car. it def. wasnt coolant, thats an easy smell to spot. dont think it was clutch, maybe it was just some chemical i used to clean the car or one picked up from the newly saled roads. o well, lemme know, sorry for rambling, thanks a lot. maybe im just paranoid.

dave

Just picked up my new 04 SVTF a couple of weeks ago, drove it home to Dallas from Cleveland so most of the miles on her are pure interstate cruise. I have also notice a smell somewhat as you described. It smell like heated metal on a new exhaust, or the oil and film burning off of new exhaust. Does not smell like a clutch nor does it smell like burning brakes.
As of yet I haven't located just what the heck it is, so suggestions are welcome.

I just picked mine up 2 weeks ago and have noticed same 'hot metal' or 'hot oil' smell after bringing her home and whenever I test her out abit. Haven't found any leaks or anything. Would like to know what the smell is also.

Check your valve cover gasket. Mine was leaking oil, and enough of it was dripping down on to the headers to cause the oil to burn. When I got it fixed, it was 50 times better, but I could still smell it a little bit. I'm beginning to think our motors simply burn a little bit of oil. Keep an eye on the oil levels and it wont be a big deal.

the dealership also puts stuff on the car to keep it from rusting before it is sold only know because they had to do mine again because they forgot some of it they said it was part of the dealer prep stuff But I might also be way wrong as that also happens allot

there was a service message (NOT a TSB) regarding smell after hard driving. ford chalked it up to clutch break in. my clutch doesn't make any smell anymore, but the smell you're probably getting is the catalytic converter. our cars run pig rich from the factory, so there's a lot of extra fuel the cat has to burn off. get the car retuned, the smell will diminish or go away

I also have that smell. - Here is what a Ford tech told me was happening (for what it is worth)- The smell (If not caused by an obvious oil leak, hard clutching or braking , can be caused by small amounts of leakage coming from the engine seals. These seals when new, need several thousand miles to cure. That is one reason why Ford states that you should not use a pure synthetic oil for the first several thousand miles. Pure synthetics will not cure the seals correctly. I baby my clutch and generally do not drive hard or brake hard. I only have 3k miles. I will see if the noise ultimately goes away.
