i've heard it too. three dealerships later, they say it's just a natural sound to a focus. i was wary, but then they took me out in a used 2k1 manual, and it made the same sound, although not as loud. if anybody else knows what this is, let me know too

It is the cat heat sheild. I just crawled out from under mine and it was the one bolt at the back of the cat had slipped past the sheild. Just get a slightly bigger stainless washer and problem solved.

So that's what it is! I know it aint the clutch cause it makes no difference in / out it goes up with rpm in idle. Like something is just loose and wobbly.
I'll do some crawling tonight.

rattle and roll

Not to be completely repetitive here but my money is on the heat shield. My car had
the "rattle" at 2k rpm I hunted everywhere and it turned out to be the corner of the shield contacting the oil pan.
It had actually bee rattling for so long that it had worn the paint off the oil pan where it was making contact. I hate noises so it was really frustrating. It was tough to find too because the noise was tansmitting right through the motor. I couldn't pin point it, but it ended up being the shield. I was worried that removing the shield would impact the oil temp because the cat is so close to the pan, but even in dead stop traffic the oil temp is not impacted.

Yes it is a cat heat shield. I got mine fixed at the dealer. They put another metal sheet - wraping around the cat and they tie it all together with the metal tie. No more problem.

Removing the shield is not a good idea. It is there for a purpose.
