For those who have traded an SVT

How much you all getting on trade for those that are trading SVT's? The family is getting bigger in August, and we have to look into getting something more SUV like (NO MINIVAN!!). I know what kbb.com and edmunds have to say on the matter, but you never get what they suggest. I'm thinking about going to carmax as I've heard good things about them. Anyone have some ideas? I have 16500 miles on it and its clean.

btw, its your standard SVT (red) with cold weather package, STS, and a tune by Wayne.

Scott

I haven't heard of too many people on this board trading in their SVT's... I've thought about it, but that's as far as I've gone. Unless you have a great dealer, you're screwed. The resale value on this car drops like a rock. The trade-in value on mine (02 with 23k miles) is around $9,500 and dealers generally try to get much less out of you than what price guides list by nickle and diming you to death ("oh there's a scratch here, hmm, the tires could be replaced, gonna need to be detailed, blah blah blah"). I assume that's why you're asking what others are actually getting. Of course you can always go to a dealer who sells what you're interested in buying and have them appraise your car for trade-in and see what they say - if you don't like it you can always back out of the deal.

CarMax is a good way to find out the local value of a car. I have used their service of appraisals and even sold them a car out right. Another good source is to do a search on Ebay of completed auctions for Ford Focus SVT. The SVTF is a nitch car that is not understood by the masses, and suffers from high deprecation due to being a Focus.
Good Luck

I traded my first one away last year on the 'ZEV for the wife ( how generous of me.... )

It was an '02 in Sonic Blue with no mods at trade in. Had 45K on the clock and had some chips here and there.

I rec'd $10,200 in ACV and bought the 17K ZTS for $11,275.

I got lucky, and the dealer is in my car club but it was because of that deal that he just sold my dad a 2005 F-150 Lariat and he'll be taking my other SVTF in trade for my next car, an '05 Mustang GT, sometime be the end of this year.

The only bad thing about Carmax is they won't negotiate with you at all. Take your KBB trade in value as good and that is probably what they will give you. Just FYI, it is $9,400.

I got $2k more for my 2003 Cobra from a Ford dealer and a better price on the car I was buying than I got from Carmax. I ended up saving about $4k total by NOT using Carmax.

Take it for what it is worth but, if you want to get more than $10k for your car, you will have to sell it yourself. Now, there can be sales tax implications to doing that since, around here anyway, if you trade a car in to a dealer, you only pay sales tax on the difference between your trade-in and the new car price so you can save some $$ there. But, if you can sell your car for $14k on the open market, that is $4k extra you have in your pocket and that will cover sales tax on a new car and then some so you come out ahead. It depends on how much time you have to sell the car and how much hassle you really want to go through to sell it yourself. Good luck!
