Tranny rattle = "gear rollover"???

Ok, so I finally got my SVTF looked at. I'm hearing the "marble in a can" rattle while in neutral, it goes away when the clutch pedal is pushed all the way in. I can also feel vibrations in the clutch pedal that are in time with the rattling noise.

The head mechanic at the dealership says this is perfectly normal and calls it "gear rollover". He states that this is normal in all manual transmissions. I'm at a loss, because this is the first car I've heard it in, and the first time I've heard of it.

He stated this while holding the printed out TSB. He agree's that the symptoms are all the same, but he doesn't think that doing the service and replacing the parts will solve the issue.

So now I have to wait for the regional engineer to show up at the dealer so I can bring my car in and show it to him. It'll be up to him whether or not the service will be performed.

Am I being hosed?

edit: I'm at 29k miles. 3yr is up in November, I have a 5yr, 75k extended powertrain. The dealer I'm at is SVT certified, it's where I got the car.

are you out of warranty? I guess they want the regional engineer to verify that it was'nt caused by user abuse. I believe the clutch is only covered up to 12000 miles so thats prolly why they are giving you a hard time.

Buddy, you are being hosed hard!! Call SVT and get this issue resolved. What he is telling you is absolute bullshit!! There is a TSB out for your exact symptoms and he has the balls to call it "gear rollover"? Don't let them do this to you man, if there is another dealership, go there, otherwise call SVT. I've heard that they usually change their tune after a call from SVT. I honestly can't believe someone would do this...fight the power man!

PS. Go evil monkey on their asses!

PPS. Let us know how it goes.

i am agreeing you are being hosed. i had the tsb done i had the same exact symptoms ratle can feel the vibration in the pedal. after the tsb there is no rattle it is silent. if the regional guy is trying to hose you to call svt. you could also take it to a different ford dealership try to find one that authorized

Thanks for the responses guys, I'd like to hear more.

I added the facts that I'm within the 3yr, 36000 mile warranty and I've got a 5yr, 75000 mile powertrain warranty. This also happened at an SVT certified dealership, though they admitted they hardly ever see Focus SVT's (not like it should matter).

Got the same problem in my 03 SVT. Took it in after hearing the same thing at about 12,000 miles and they replaced the whole tranny (they said). I got it back after a week or so without a sound. About a month ago the same thing noise and all came back at about 15,000 miles. I took it in again with an even worse noise than last time and they told me everything was fine. I need that number to call SVT. someone help. Good Luck man.

Did they use the revised parts? Or did they just stick replace it with the old parts?

Ok, talked to SVT and spoke to Mark. He agreed that the noise is not gear rollover. He also agreed to call the dealer and speak with them.

However, he says that because of the higher miles (29k) that there may be trouble getting the dealer to do the service, and it probably will still be up to the regional service dude.
