Question $115 To Just Plug In My Car!! HELP

Well my check engine light came on the other day and since I'm no longer under waranty, I went to my local ford dealer just to see if they could plug her in to see if she's spitting out any codes. The guy their told me it would cost $115. MY JAW DROPPED!! I'm a high school student with limited income and I have to pay this kind of money for a guy to stick a plug in an outlet? You gotta be shittin me. Well Here I am. I failed my ispection cause my check engine light didn't go on (i tried taking out the light bulb and hoped they wouldn't notice). So here I am in a bit of a pickle. If anyone knows where I can go to have my CPU checked for free in jersey PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!!!!!!

EDIT:

They wouldn't pass it just because the light was on? They must be very anal up there in jersey! My CEL was on in my escort and it passed inspection no problem (emissions test and all). I will say that the first place I took it to automatically assumed it wouldn't pass because my light was on so I took it somewhere else and they didn't say anything about the light at all.

I have heard the "autozone" branch of stores will check codes for free? I think there was another store (same type of general auto, but forgot the name) will also check them?

they shouldn't charge you a dime to tell you what is wrong with it. Most places have to call you with a repair estimate, hence a diagnosis, before they can begin work.

well, the 115 is for hooking it up to diagnostics, to let it read the codes. (so it does sound like they told him in advance, because he didnt have them do it)
