This is good info to have. The contact number I got is 800-275-4283. This goes to a Gates call center in Kentucky, they can't do anything but refer you back to the distributor you bought from and potentially give you a sales rep phone number for someone in your area.

The sales rep I talked to gave me the same info as the call center, send it back so they will send it to Gates for testing.

No updates on repair otherwise from my end. Head is still at the machine shop.

Thanks for the support shown. The Focus community is awesome.

I just finished unpacking the timing belt assembly, water pump, and serpentine belt assembly which I ordered from Steve @ Tousley. All parts are Motorcraft parts, and only the serp. belt tensioner says "Gates" on it, it is made in Canada.
The timing belt is made in Italy, the t-belt tensioner is made in Canada, and the t-belt idler is German. Pics below are of the tensioner and the idler. It makes sense to me, to stick with Ford parts.
It's all going in next week.

IF YOU HAVE A GATES TENSIONER, REGARDLESS OF DESIGN, CHECK IT ASAP
I had to change spark plugs today and thought I'd check the tensioner....it's the older non-revised type. The belt and pulleys are one year old and less than 8000 miles.

It was fully beyond the maximum slack limit by about 3mm! I did correct it and torqued it back. Funny thing is the belt didn't have any loose finger feel to it, before or after.

I really, really, really didn't want to re-do my timing for at least another 70K but I don't know that I can trust this damned Gates tensioner now. I was very close to ordering all Ford/Motorcraft parts but since everyone seemed to have such good things to say about Gates I went against my better judgement and now Its going to mean re-doing my timing. I guess its better than dealing with bent valves and a busted head though ...

So why did you install the 294a instead of using the 294b?

You might not have to do the whole thing again. Check it first and tighten it up if you have to then go from there. Be 110% sure to keep at least some tension on the belt - don't let it go completely slack when loosening the bolt! Also use a good torque wrench...it's too critical to use a 'calibrated hand.'

It is an auto *range* tensioner. Once it is set at the correct range, when installed correctly, tension is set by rotating the tension mechanism and an internal spring should keep between a min and max range. After it's set it should NEVER go outside of that range faster than the belt stretch would allow it to do.

What we're talking about is new tensioners going far beyond the max slack limit shortly after correct installation, thus not maintaining correct tension.

At the time I ordered through Amazon the B kit was out of stock. I didn't see it as an issue as it had the same parts plus I was able to get a deal on the shipping since I was buying Ford timing tools at the same time. Saving $5 bucks cost me 2 grand so far... :(
