This might sound obvious, but make sure the plug boots are pushed all the way down onto the plugs! I had a misfire issue that I could not figure out, so in frustration I got all my weight on the plug boots while twisting them down, and it cured my misfire.

The boots do not seat very easily, and I've had the same problem on both my SVT's after a plug change.

they make plug boot grease for this reason! no they can be a bitch to get on i have done plugs in the zetecs before and been in a hurry and put the boot on cocked and miss the plug entirely its easy to do when your not paying attention

Misfire diag is pretty simple but to answer your questions, yes - it would be odd for you to have a bad coil or connector that was intermittent and cylinder specific...but it all depends on how it fails.

If the plug and wire are known good - swap the coil. It's easy. While doing that, check the connector. Wiggle/jiggle see if anything happens. If it still misses only on #1, swap a fuel injector. This isn't very difficult either. Plus, since you will be right by the intake.. take a gander at your boots.

If it isn't fuel or ignition - it's likely base engine.

What exactly did the dealer say? Did you just authorize a diagnosis? If so...they sure didn't diagnose anything...

I have this SAME exact problem on my 03 svt, it's NOT the ignition. It's your intake manifold boots. I was in the same boat as you before I found out the problem. I replaced everything, even though it was the tune, so I got an after market tune. Plus I have a remote start, and hearing her miss fire on #1 when I started her up, was just NASTY.

Check the worm clamps on the intake manifold, they slowly loosen over time, and will cause cylinder one to run lean and foul out the plug. I check them at every oil change, or sooner.

The only great thing was I used Motorcraft Copper plugs, so it was like $6 to replace all plugs when ever this happened. Also make sure they are gapped properly, and that your valve cover isn't leaking oil into the spark plug holes

I've got this going on as well. I'll tighten the worm clamps in the morning and see if that works. I just hate to throw parts at it to try and fix the problem.

IMO if all of your plugs, and wires are new and your coil is fireing try looking at fuel. i no on my buddys car he wasnt able to give any more then a quarter throttle or the car would fall on its face. turns out it was a clogged fuel filter. try testing pressure before and after fuel filter it should be around 35-40 at wot i believe and if its at that before filter and less after then its the filter if its at like say 20psi before the filter then ur haven a fuel pump problem. no i dont think this would ussually cause a CEL but im thinkin if maybe ithe clog also may have gotten into an injector or somethin. idk just an idea
