Aw crap!!!

so today i noticed a clunking noise coming from what sounded like underneith the car in the engine bay while it was running. it really sounds like its the bottom end. its not a constant clunk clunk clunk clunk clunk but more of like a off beat clunk almost like a cammed out rough idle but in the bottom end. i have read on hear that the engine ticks naturally on the top end becuas of valve lash and injectors so basically what im wondering is is this clunkin common? normal? what most likely is it? and how do i fix it? thanks for the input.

I'd look at the heat shields first. They do have a tendency to rust loose and rattle.
Along with that, check for exhaust leaks. Sometimes leaks near the header can sound odd and close to the sounds of bottom end noises, to the untrained ear.

Something like a rod knock at idle is generally a pretty severe case and you don't want to run the engine unless you absolutely have to, it's not going to fix itself and running it only makes things worse. But a rod knock would be a repetitive sound, generally, and be a hollow type sound.
And actually your first step if you really think it's in the bottom end is to verify there is oil in the engine, and place the dipstick on a clean white piece of paper (like an index card) and look for metal shavings.

thanks for the input ill check the dip stick but i literaly just gave it an oil change 200 miles ago and i just noticed the noise now. i only bought th car about 2 weeks ago so im wondering if the noise could have been supressed with a thick oil as fas as the rod knockk goes you said it would bee a constant and repetative noise currect? if so idt its that but is there anything else down there like in the tranny or something that would clunk like that thanks for the help i do appreciate it. my dad is an experienced ford tec for over 20 years i just haven t been able to get him over hear to listen to it. but when i hear from him with his diagnosis ill post it up

well i found out that the clunking noise stopps when i put the clutch down. if the clutch is all the way up you dont hear it all the time either. but if i appply the slightest bit of pressure to the pedal you hear it then push down a little more and it goes away.. so im 99 percent sure its not the motor but i still have no idea what it is. thow out bearing?
