no heat and high oil temp

I have a 2003 SVT ZX5 with 125k. It stopped making heat on the way home last night. The engine temp gauge is normal and the oil pressure is normal, but the oil temp gauge got into the red and I had to pull over.

I have had heater cores go bad in cars before so that is what I suspected when all I was getting was cold air out of the vents, but I'm not understanding why the oil temp spiked? I haven't had time to look at the car since I got home last night. Any ideas?

Even though you said your coolant temp read normal, I would still check your coolant level. This is the best explenation for both of these, without enough coolant there is no heat and would cause oil temps to spike. Also if the coolant temp sensor only has air around it due to no coolant, it won't read the engine temp properly and might show that everything is ok.

I'm thinking low coolant level also. Check that first.

I had the same problem when a coolant hose wore a hole in it. The oil temp gauge would go to red then the coolant would temp would go to red. But the oil temp always went first. Turned out to be the coolant hose that runs over the trans to the oil cooler was leaking. Like others stated check for leaks starting with the common t-stat housing. Good luck.

Filled the coolant, was low. All temps in normal range now. Was able to drive the car today, but didn't have any time to look for the leak. Will have to do so tomorrow. Thanks again everyone.

Macdiesel, thanks for mentioning that hose. I did look at the tstat when filling up, looked good there.
