6th Gear

This is nit-picky I know, but I wish that 6th gear would bring the rpms lower at highway speeds for best gas milage. At 75mph my rpms are just over 3,000.....I would thought that 6th gear could drop that to at least 2,500.

The transmission was not built as having 6th being the overdrive. It has six gears to keep the engine in the power range. It is geared with very close ratios between gears to keep the RPM's up. I wish they would have made it overdrive. But as of now I'm getting 34 on the highway. THANK YOU ROYAL PURPLE!!!

My 6spd 1.8t will go about 75 at 3000 rpm's. If I go inbetween 65-80miles per hour I will get 30mpg. It's tough getting the right rpm to where the engine isn't laboring and the turbo is spooling just enough for good gas mileage. It is odd though, they should have put 6spd further away from 5th to obtain maximum gas mileage. But, I also use 6th everywhere. If I'm cruising down a backroad at 45, i'll stick in 6th gear at around 1750 rpm's and get about 40mpg.

^^^ yeah I try to keep the revs down as much as possible when cruising, I do the same. Definately saves gas.

Umm 6th gear is definately an overdrive gear, look at the ratios. Higher revs come with the territory of owning a 4 banger.

Just giving it a lower ratio wouldn't neccessarily increase gas mileage, you also have to take into account other factors, the biggest being throttle position. If you lower the ratio you will have to apply more throttle to maintain speed compared to the stock ratio.

If giving a car a super low ratio is all that was needed for improved fuel economy, don't you think thats what all the manufacturers would do?

Quit yer bellyachin'!!!
I have two motorcycles that both turn around 6000 rpm at 75-80 mph.
Of course, my wife's Altima 3.5SE spins at about 2500 rpm at 75-80 mph (I think - it's been a while since I drove it).
