Rattling noise( metal tag?)

Recently I noticed on my 2003 SVT Focus that with the radio off driving at greater than about 40mph I hear a rattling noise coming from the front of car. I think it may be one of those metal tags that alot of people found on the radiator support front bumper area of their 03/04 Cobras. It sounds like a metal tag flapping in the wind kind of. Anyone know of this issue on the Focus. If so any ideas where to look. The car is essentially brand new it was a leftover and got a pretty good deal on it. I plan to look around for it as soon as I get a chance to put it up on a lift.

Thanks in advance.

does it rattle when goin over bumps, or potholes? My cat heat shield was making the same noise before it came off in my hand.

No. It is most noteable on the highway at cruising speed on nice newly paved road.

I heard a similar noise driving anywhere from 10-40mph (anything higher the freeway/wind is too loud). Turns out that the front cat heat shield cracked and was falling off. The dealer told me that the hole for the washer in the heat shield is a little too big or something like that.

Anywhose, the rattling only occurred at a specific RPM range, maybe similar to yours? Had the dealer order one..only thing is that now i'm in SD and the new heat shield is in norcal .... ::sigh::

The holes in the cat heat shield are too big for the fasteners holding them on. They like to come loose. My lower shield is loose at the rear and needs fixing.

The catalytic converter heat shield is the most common source of metal rattling type noises on the SVT, but you never know, could be something else too. The heat shield is a good place to start. Mine rattles, too.

I clamped mine on the old fashioned way, with a pair of stainless steel band clamps. No more rattle, and no possibility getting red flagged at the inspection station.

I had a bunch of rattles from the shields on my old Miata. Same fix.

I don't like removing heat shields, they do have a purpose, and it only saves a tiny bit of weight. But that's just my opinion.

^^i don't park on grass, so i'm not worried!! it's not a matter of weight saving, it's a matter of getting rid of the annoying rattle.......
