Oil Temperature Redlines when Idling

My Oil temperature redlines whenever I get into stop-n-go traffic or idle after running on the highway for awhile. It goes back down to the middle of the gauge, when I get moving again. Is this normal?

No! Are you under warrentee? Take it in.
It could be a cooling system problem, oil pump problem, etc.

Doesn't sound normal at all. I'd have that checked right away.

what kind of oil temp gauge did you install? Was it installed correctly? Before you check the engine there might be a problem with the gauge or something.

I believe he's referring to the built-in gauge that the SVT comes with... which by the way isn't terribly accurate. So it might be hotter than the gauge shows, or not as hot as it shows. IIRC the reading you see on the gauge is based on calculations made by reading the water temperature, I don't think there is a dedicated oil temperature sending unit.

He said in another thread that it's an 02, in which case his warranty might already be up. Mine has 15,000 miles or 9 months left whichever comes first. Which means it's time to get my butt in gear and start complaining to the dealer about stuff while it's still free...

A quick and dirty temp test is to turn the heater on and feel the air temp.

I have let my car idle with A/C on in over 100F heat and the needle was in the middle.

...you would think it would get hot but I swear the needle never moves once it is hot. Maybe that is a bad thing...

I have used a little Water Wetter a few months ago because it gets hot in the summer here, 111F highs.

Get it checked out...STAT!

More info...
Stock oil temp gauge in SVT, farthest gauge to right. It redlines whenever I run it and then slow down to stop-n-go or idle. It goes maximum redline, but quickly goes back to the middle of the gauge if I get it going 40mph or so.

It has been in the 80's here in Colorado. The coolant temperature has never been past the middle of it's gauge.

Does anyone else see this happen? What are some other ideas on the cause?
