metal tapping in reverse

hey, here is my first post, and as the proud owner of a 04 SVT focus w/ 14000 miles (all put on by my dad when he owned it) the only problem i have is that when in reverse is sounds as if there is a metal tapping in the engine compartment. there is no other time when it happens. i only notice it coming out of my driveway, maybe its just a cold thing, but i dont know. it may be coming fron my air cleaner which is the steeda filter (not sure if its a true CAI). any ideas. i cant remember if it happened b4 the filter (i wasnt driving it then) but it is now. thanx for any input.

dave

I had this very same problem. However, I would also hear some metal contact sometimes while ridding over uneven surfaces, or turning while shifting gears.

I also have a Steeda Short Ram intake, and I got it installed shortly after my car had been at the dealer for clutch/flywheel problem and ECU flash.

I initially was not sure if the sound was dealer related, or it was due to my intake. But after some inspection under the hood I was able to duplicate the sound buy rocking the air filter back and forth and realising that the edge of the filter was making contact with some metal (I assume to hold the stock air-box assembly in place) located behind the battery.

I adjusted the position of the air filter so that it was sitting higher up in the engine bay and was, therefore, not able to make contact with the metal. Since then- no rattle.

Hope this helps.
