Question SVT Supplementary Owner's Manual Oil Filter Error ?

The SVT Supplementary Owner's Manual (copyright 2001) states that the correct oil filter for the SVT is FL-400S. Discussions on this forum point to FL-2005. Which is correct/best ? What's the difference ?

minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html claims FRAM filters are deficient - and recommends Baldwin as #1, with honorable mention to Mobil 1, Purolator Pure One, and maybe Motorcraft. K&N is not tested (and it appears K&N doesn't have a filter for the Focus SVT). Comments ?

the svt takes the 2005

I worked for a ford dealership for about a year or so, and even their parts computer is messed up. the parts computer calls for a 400 on the SVT as well, but the 400 isn't the right size. the thread might be the same...not too sure, but the 400 is too big and will not seal against the SVT motor.

The correct filter is the FL-400S per the manual.

I believe that the recommended oil filter was changed from FL-400S to FL-2005 in the 2004 SVTF supplemental manual.

See HERE for a long discussion describing it.

they are the same filter except the 2005 has a plate to hold oil in on startup and the 400 doesnt...either will work, but ford did replace the 400 with the 2005, my book says 400, but when ford changed my oil they put on the 2005

Just use the Pure One by puralator or the K&N oil filters I use the pure one, its more expensive, but the puralator filter filters smaller particals, both the k&N and the pure one are micron filters. In my opinion, and it's opinion only, using ford crap is like using fram crap. I've always used pure one, Its never done me wrong, as the other less expensive oil filters have also never done me wrong.

Would love to use the Pure 1 only it's the wrong application for our engines. Some of us still have a healthy amount of warranty to maintain. I don't care to be the owner that has to argue with Ford when your motor goes boom (for any reason) and you have nothing to show but receipts for the wrong filter.

That was a good read on the SVT oil filter. I use the FL-400S for the following reasons:

1) its the one recommended in my 2003 SVT owner's supplement
2) the SVT engineers were the ones who put the supplement together.
3) I haven't had any leakage of oil or any oil related issues at all - nada.
4) It would be a pretty good case in court if your engine blew due to the wrong oil filter i.e.
the one that SVT recommended.
5) Bottom line....It's my car.

^^don't sound so offended. I do believe, however, that the FL-400S was an error.

I have a 2004 SVT and my SVT supplement clearly states to use an FL-2005 filter. Since there have been no changes in engine design between 2002-2004, I would assume that they changed the filter designation for a reason. If you choose to ignore that, fine. We are all just trying to help each other treat our cars as best as possible.
