Let's start with a question about headlights

I am beginning my search for an SVT Focus and was wondering how crucial HIDs are. I cannot stand having poor lighting. My last three cars had great headlights (great beam pattern and HIDs--E30, S2000, and EVO). My wife has a 2010 Focus which has some of the worst headlights I have ever seen. Night driving is unbearable; and no, I am not exaggerating. I would not have bought that car had I test driven it at night.

So, how are the normal headlights in the SVT Focus? If you don't have the projectors with HIDs, do you wish you had them? Are they a necessity? I would love for owners of both to chime in with their opinions. I would love to narrow my search down as much as I can early on in my search.

Follow up question will be about 3 door vs. 5 door...

The HID lights in my SVT are by far the BEST I've ever had!
I spent extra time trying to find one equipped with them, and I'm damn glad I did.

BTW...
I've had quite a few different setups in my cars over the years, right up to quad 130watt halogen high beams, and these HIDs blow em away. Period.

I would love if someone without HIDs would chime in and give their input too.

The stock svt lights aren't bad. they are better than my old focus lx's, or it might be because those lenses needed to be polished. Either way i would find one with hid's, im in the process of putting my st170 headlights in with hid's. i've heard the mach hid's have the best light output of all headlights for focus's, and they're sexy as hell! i'm sure you would want to replace the boring stocker's after owning them for a while, so just buy an svt that has them already equipped.

I have the stock SVT headlights and I wouldn't complain about the stock halogen bulbs because they were bright and their light throw was good. I did however replace the bulbs with an HID conversion kit, so I installed new bulbs and ballasts in my headlights and fogs. The HIDs are much brighter and I opted for the 8k bulbs. I bought them from a guy in Texas for $69 per kit, which included the bulbs, ballasts and all wires required to install them. I did have to order relays to get proper power to the bulbs though.

I'd be glad to post some before and after pictures if you'd like.

I vote HID headlights also. And the Machs are just great.

My SVT came with the HIDs. But before I bought my SVT, I drove a friend's SVT that had the stock Headlights with out the HIDs.

They weren't bad at night, but the HIDs are definitely a large improvement for visibility at night and through fog.

And since your experience has been with cars that have great driving visibility, I wouldn't settle for anything less than a SVT with the Factory HIDs.

Thanks for all of the replies. Save for a steal of a deal, it looks like I'll have to rule out those without HIDs.
