Rant Thread: MT285

I already have a thread about the technical aspect of what happened to my car. Consider this a general rant on the MT285. Why are we stuck with a trans that detonates? Not only can it/does it just plain blow up (even when treated and maintained reasonably well), but it's also astronomically expensive to replace. Let's not even talk about the fact that NO ONE seems to rebuild them but Getrag, or the silly debacle that is our clutch TSB.

/rant. Justification below.

Yea, it's a bummer that you really can't rebuild it. Can't be lucky had have a b-series honda tranny that you can mix whatever you want it in. At least when it let go it didn't take out the battery cables or anything and cause a fire. Good luck with everything

Had the same happen to my 02 svt. Wasn't even laying on it and Bam!!!! Had to get a new one. Never had another problem though, well until I wrecked it:(. I have an 03 now and I am hoping it won't have the same problems.

Good verse thehubster.

Im not aware that there's a major problem with the getrag as i havnt seen much about it, but ive seen plenty of people go 100K+ on the stock clutch, and some people are hitting 200k on their SVT without having any major issues.

Care to elaborate on exactly what causes this?

Well, I'm not entirely sure. The clutch was still there. The spider gear mangled it a bit (actually locked the engine from the clutch hitting the spider gear bits and wedged it between the clutch and the case), but it's all in once piece...ready for replacement, but it didn't explode like some had predicted.

The flywheel, however, was loose. As in, you could rock it back and forth while it was still bolted on. I'm thinking this was the issue? Not sure how it made the diff blow up.

Everything pre-diff in the trans seems to be alright. All of the gears seems to still be there. Anyone have the diff-side housing laying around? I'd kinda like to slap it back together with an LSD and have an extra transmission in case/when something happens again...

**edit**

Specifically I want to try the OBX LSD. I've heard mixed/bad things about it, but it I've read that if you tear it down and rebuild it before you install it, it's solid (read that on a few threads on here and FJ, as well as from a friend who is big into Honda--same story there).

Pkmgarf- Did you end up finding another 285, or did you go with the MTX75 swap?

I have another MT285. Just waiting on UPS to get me the clutch/flywheel. I'm still looking for the half of the case that I need to repair the old one though.

I really didn't want to do the MTX75. I know it's cheaper, but something in me just couldn't let the six speed go.
