SVT Exhaust Backfire/Popping

My 2003 SVT runs perfectly, but I was wondering if anyone can comment on this:

My car has an off-road pipe in place of the cat. When I back out of the throttle, the exhaust pops/backfires, sometimes a good bit. It's not annoying, and it usually happens more (louder) during the first minute or two after start-up. It's not causing any problems, but I am wondering if it might be a sign that the engine's running too rich. I assume that you'll get this a little without a cat, but I was just wondering what anyone on the forum thinks.

Thanks.

it does sound good and i love it!!

its due to the high compression our engines are running. its annoying? put your cat back on.
a tune will also decrease the popping cause the factory tune is waaay rich.

My car did that after I put the magniflow exhaust whenever I would let off the gas or down shifted so I decided to go with a Borla because it sounds alot better.

As I stated, it's not annoying. In fact, kind of cool. Just wondered if it was because it might be running rich. A tune in the future may reveal what Scammer claims. Thx.

What scrammer says is tru. i just got a tune myself and it got rid of 90% of the popping, and when it does its not one of the really loud ones, its a deeper pop, sounds good. also with the tune it revs a lot smoother and u can hear it, sounds a lot better with a tune imo!

Thanks for Your Input

I appreciate the feedback. On your suggestions, I'm investigating a tune. Sound of car with off-road pipe is great as it is, but as far as I know, a lot of popping/backfire can often be a sign of a too-rich fuel mix. Let's see what a tune can do!

THANKS!

To verify, a tune will decrease the amount of backfire. You won't get it as much during driving conditions but will still be there one or two minutes after start-up. You can still get it to backfire downshifting with the revs up pretty high, hell, even a slow 2-1 downshift around 30 mph will make it yak pretty good....lol
